The Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise has mourned the deaths of some cast members over the years.
The hit series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, followed Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) as a high school student who also happened to be in charge of saving the world from vampires and demons. Charisma Carpenter, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Stewart Head, David Boreanaz and James Marsters made up the rest of the cast.
After the show ended, the alums weathered several losses. Brendon died in March 2026 at age 54 of “natural causes,” his family revealed in a statement. His costars publicly honored Brendon, who played Xander Harris on all seven seasons of Buffy.
“I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky,” Gellar wrote via Instagram before quoting one of Xander’s famous lines. “They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes, because nobody’s watching me.”
Michelle Trachtenberg, meanwhile, died in February 2025 after a private health battle.
“It is with great sadness to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away,” a rep for the Gossip Girl alum told Us in a statement at the time. “The family requests privacy for their loss. There are no further details at this time.”

Camden Toy

Camden Toy, who was known for his work playing monsters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died at age 68 in December 2023. Before his death, Toy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which his longtime partner, Bethany Henderson, opened up about on social media.
“He was diagnosed in February last year after months of mysterious pain. For many reasons we were very hopeful for, at least, a longer and more fruitful time on planet Earth. Even the more recent challenges felt more like a hiccup in progress. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ve reached the end of the road with the doctor’s treatments,” she wrote via Facebook noting that Toy did not go public with his diagnosis “for many reasons.”
