Call of Duty: Warzone, the “massive free-to-play combat arena” game, is moving on from last-generation platforms. Alongside the announcement of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 back in May, Activision announced that Warzone will no longer be playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.
Support for Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will come to an end shortly after the launch of season 1 of Modern Warfare 4. The next mainline Call of Duty game launches on Oct. 23. Warzone will still be playable on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
Activision and the Call of Duty teams ending support for Call of Duty: Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One won’t come as much of a surprise to players on those platforms. After all, Modern Warfare 4 is also leaving last-gen consoles behind — this year’s mainline Call of Duty game is bound for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
Call of Duty: Warzone will continue to exist on current-gen platforms. Beginning with season 1 of Modern Warfare 4, Warzone will “integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression as part of a connected experience between both titles,” a post attributed to Call of Duty Staff reads.
Call of Duty: Warzone is no longer available for new downloads on PS4 and Xbox One, though existing players can continue playing the game until MW4 season 1 launches. In June, the in-game store for Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will be removed. Players will still be able to progress through free Battle Pass tiers, including unlocking new weapons in remaining Black Ops 7 seasons, the Call of Duty team says.
Call of Duty: Warzone originally launched in 2020 as a free-to-play battle royale game set in the Call of Duty franchise. That version of the game shut down in 2023, after its replacement, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, launched. The 2022 version of Warzone ultimately dropped the “2.0” branding to become, simply, Call of Duty: Warzone.
