St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn was involved in a car accident on Wednesday, April 1, just hours after delivering the game-winning hit in his team’s game against the New York Mets.
“Following [Wednesday’s] game, Masyn Winn was involved in a single-car accident on Interstate 64/Highway 40 due to wet pavement,” the statement read, per MLB.com. “Masyn, who was alone in the vehicle, was attended to by local police and Cardinals security and medical staff. He was examined at a nearby hospital and suffered no serious injuries.”
The statement continued, “We are grateful that he is OK, and thank the first responders in our community who helped Masyn [yesterday].”
Winn, 24, will have a day to rest up with the Cardinals off on Thursday, April 2, before they hit the road for a series in Detroit against the Tigers.
The Gold Glove shortstop is off to a slow start at the plate for the Cardinals, going just 4-25 over the first six games of the season. But his game-winner came in the 11th inning to deliver St. Louis its second-straight win — a clutch moment he hopes could be the start of a hot streak.
“It wasn’t the best swing,” Winn said after the game, according to MLB.com. “But I was just trying to get to first base, just in case.”
He added, “I think a swinging bunt was my first hit last year — I think that’s what got me going. So maybe it’s something like that … At some point, I’m going to get hot, for sure.”
Winn is entering his third full season in the Major Leagues after the Cardinals drafted him in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft. He had a busy offseason, announcing his engagement to longtime girlfriend Gianna Pettus in November.
“Locked in with my fortnite duo for life 💍,” the pair wrote in a joint Instagram post in November alongside a carousel of engagement photos.
Pettus expanded in another post, which featured a video showing how her family and friends planned the surprise engagement.
“Rich in life because of my friends, family, and my fiancé,” she wrote in the caption. “From months of planning, weeks of buying all the supplies, and a full day of setting up everything, my people really gave me the greatest gift ever. Not to mention, I found myself saying yes to the love of my life at my beloved grandmother’s house, right next to the tire swing I spent my childhood playing on.”
