Dark Horse Comics presents the Black Hammer #1 Facsimile Reprint, a collectible reprint of the first issue of the Eisner Award—winning series written by Jeff Lemire, illustrated by Dean Ormston, colored by Dave Stewart, and lettered by Nate Piekos. Released in celebration of the critically acclaimed superhero universe’s tenth anniversary, the Facsimile Reprint faithfully reproduces the issue with its original design, ads, and backup material. It will be available in comic shops in February 2027 with both its original cover and a brand-new 1:10 variant cover illustrated by Lemire.
About Black Hammer:
Once they were heroes, but that age has long since passed. Banished from existence by a multiversal crisis, the old champions of Spiral City—Abraham Slam, Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, Madame Dragonfly, and Barbalien—now lead simple lives in a timeless farming town. Even as they try to find their way home, trouble has a unique way of finding heroes wherever they are!
“When we started Black Hammer ten years ago I never could have dreamed it would become so big and such an important part of my life,” said Lemire. “And, with a new series starting next year, it’s really wonderful to have this facsimile edition of our very first Black Hammer comic coming out again so readers can see where it all started.”
Black Hammer #1 Facsimile Reprint will be available in comic shops on February 10, 2027. It is now available for preorder from your local comic shop for $4.99.
Stay tuned for more news on the next installment in the Black Hammer universe, Black Hammer: Forever, from Lemire and Mark Buckingham (Fables, Hellblazer) and more tenth anniversary celebrations.

Praise for Black Hammer:
“Amazing. Just flat-out amazing.”—Patton Oswalt (Minor Threats)
“Black Hammer is easily one of Lemire’s best creations.”—Scott Snyder (Absolute Batman, Wytches)
“I don’t read many comics these days, and I can’t remember the last time I read a superhero comic, but I’m loving Black Hammer.”—Mike Mignola (Hellboy, Bowling with Corpses and Other Strange Tales from Lands Unknown)
“This book is a freaking masterpiece.”—James Gunn, co-chief of DC Studios, writer-director of Superman (2025)
“Black Hammer feels like a superhero story through an X-Files lens; it’s strange and melancholy and real. The tale evokes an immense world filled with typically deep Lemire-ian themes of isolation, joy, and simplicity.” —Charles Soule (The Lucky Devils, Eight Billion Genies)
“Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer feels like it’s walking two roads—one honoring the past of superhero comics, and one forging a path into the future of the genre.”—Cullen Bunn (Harrow County)
“As much a study of loneliness and isolation as it is a superhero deconstruction. If Black Hammer lives up to its early promise, it will deserve a place on the shelf right next to the Watchmen series.”—Publisher’s Weekly (Starred Review)
“Every so often, you read a comic that grabs hold of you and won’t let go. Its world is fascinating, its characters are captivating, and its art is mesmerizing.”—IGN
