Director and writer Charles Shyer, known for Father of the Bride, has died. He was 83.
His daughter Hallie Meyers-Shyer confirmed the news to the The Hollywood Reporter.
She told the outlet he died after a “brief illness”.

In a statement shared with Deadline, the Oscar-nominated writer’s family remembered his “extraordinary life” and legacy.
“It’s with an indescribably heavy heart that we share the news of our beloved father, Charles Shyer’s passing,” they said.
“His loss leaves an unfillable hole in our lives, but his legacy lives on through his children and the five decades of wonderful work he’s left behind.”

“We honour the extraordinary life he led and know there will never be another quite like him,” the statement continued.
Shyer worked as a writer and director in Hollywood for nearly five decades.
He started out in the late ’70s with writing credits on films such as House Calls.

Shyer began the next decade with the 1980 film Private Benjamin, starring Goldie Hawn.
He was a writer and producer on the film alongside Nancy Meyers and Harvey Miller.
Private Benjamin earned Shyer an Academy Award nomination and a Writers Guild of America Award win for the screenplay.
The film also marked the beginning of his team-up with American filmmaker Meyers, whom he married in 1980.
Shyer and Meyers were wed for nearly two decades before divorcing in 1999.

The pair share two daughters together: Annie Meyers-Shyer, 44, whom they welcomed in 1980, and Hallie, 37, born in 1987.
The couple went on to co-write several movies together, including the Father of the Bride remake duology, starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, and directed by Shyer.
In 1998, Shyer wrote and produced alongside director Meyers on the Lindsay Lohan remake of The Parent Trap.
He continued working in Hollywood in recent years, with credits on the 2022 film The Noel Diary and Best. Christmas. Ever! in 2023.
Meyers paid tribute to her late ex-husband on social media with two black and white throwback photos of them.
“Charles Shyer, 1941 -2024 💔” she simply wrote with a broken-hearted emoji.

Williams-Paisley played the bride-to-be, Annie Banks.
”When I was 19, Charles Shyer jump-started my career, and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity he and Nancy Meyers gave me,” she wrote alongside a photo of her and Myers on what appeared to be the ’90s film set.
“They were my Hollywood family for a time, and I wouldn’t be who I am today without them,” she continued.
“He will be missed. I’m sending so much love to the family. ❤️❤️❤️,” she concluded.
Shyer’s daughter Hallie thanked Williams-Paisley for the “beautiful” tribute.
In her own Instagram Story, Hallie remembered her late father as “a complete original”.
