Charlize Theron is set to star in a new genre thriller set up at Netflix titled Apex. She will also produce the project, which will be directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest, Adrift).
The story is described as “Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs and follows a rock climber who finds herself being hunted in the wild.”
That sounds like an intriguing story and another great character for Theron to play! I’m sure she’ll deliver another great performance with some badass elements.
Jeremy Robbins write the script, and it’s explained that this film’s development is a “rare case in the current state of the industry as so many studios are looking for a big splashy package full of talent before coming on board.”
In the case of Apex, “Netflix execs were so blown away by the script that they bought with only the producers on board. When it came to an actor and director, Theron and Kormakur were their first choices and in another rare case both committed after reading the script.”
The report goes on to say that, “In a time when sequels are still dominating the release schedule, Apex is an example of a great original story still attracting A-list names to be a part of it.”
This is one of the upcoming original film projects that seems like it might be worth getting excited about. It’s a shame that it won’t get a wide theatrical release.
