Christopher Nolan will be presented with an honorary award at the upcoming 49th French Cèsar ceremony in Paris on February 23.
He follows in the footsteps of David Fincher last year as well as other César honoraries such as Cate Blanchett, George Clooney and Michael Douglas.
The honor comes amid a high-profile awards season for Nolan as his latest film Oppenheimer racks up awards and nominations across the board.
“The release of each of his works is the subject of a real event. Since his debut with Following, Christopher Nolan has had a passion and unwavering commitment to the theatrical cinematic experience and continually pushes the boundaries of storytelling,’ the César Academy said in a statement.
His films, such as Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy, have been recognized with a multitude of awards around the world, including 11 Oscars. His latest masterpiece, Oppenheimer, a true global phenomenon, was acclaimed by critics and the public for its revolutionary visual aesthetic,” it added.
Nolan has a strong following in France. Inception sold 5M tickets there to gross close to $40M, while Dunkirk made around $20m at the box office.
Earlier in the day, the César Academy also announced that French director Agnès Jaoui would also be feted with an honorary award.
The nominees for the 48th César Awards will be announced on January 24.
