CD Projekt Red, developers of Cyberpunk 2077, are teasing something to come on September 4, 2025, prompting many players to speculate about the rumored Project Orion. It’s basically an open secret at this point that Project Orion is the code name for Cyberpunk‘s sequel. We still know very little about Project Orion, apart from the faintest details of its setting.
Now, though, Cyberpunk is teasing something new, to be revealed tomorrow, on social media. It’s unclear exactly what to expect, but fan speculation has already run wild – could this be the long-awaited first tease for Project Orion?
Cyberpunk 2077 Is Revealing Something On September 4
Rosalind Myers’ Call For Netrunners
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) yesterday, Cyberpunk shared this directive from President Rosalind Myers (who features prominently in the Phantom Liberty DLC) in which she calls for “brave netrunners” to join the NUSA in fending off a mysterious cybersecurity threat.
The announcement gives a date of September 4, 2025 – in other words, this Thursday. The announcement gives few other details, but the implication is clear enough – watch this space on September 4 to learn more about what’s next for Cyberpunk. But what could that be?
Is Cyberpunk’s New Tease For DLC, Project Orion, Or Something Else?
What We Know (& Don’t Know)
Of course, most players’ minds went directly to Project Orion, the upcoming sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Personally, I’m not expecting any kind of major Orion announcement this week; I suspect the sequel is still a long ways away, and that the grand majority of CDPR’s resources are going towards The Witcher 4 at this point.
Others with more tempered expectations have come to believe that Cyberpunk is teasing an upcoming DLC. After all, President Myers played an important role in the first one. Rumors about its canceled, Moon-focused DLC ran rampant.
However, during an October 2023 investor presentation (available on YouTube; first spotted by PC Gamer), Cyberpunk 2077 director and joint CEO of CDPR Adam Badowski made it clear that the developers had decided not to release any more add-ons after Phantom Liberty. Instead, they’d pour all their resources into developing a sequel.
Still, it’s not impossible to think they’ve changed their minds. A second DLC is a little more realistic than a sequel announcement at this point, even if CDPR’s executives have discouraged it.
But I have another theory. Cyberpunk 2077 made a big showing at E3 2018, revealing a bizarre trailer framed as a hacker hijacking the presentation and leaking the trailer. Scrolling text hidden in this trailer was actually the trailhead for an augmented reality game (ARG).
It’s not unheard of for games especially to use ARGs as a marketing tactic – in the age of social media, it’s a great way to get people talking about your upcoming release, revealing little tidbits of information at your own pace while leaving players hungry for more.
So I think there’s a good chance that this could be the start of something similar: an ARG as a marketing tactic to tease… something Cyberpunk-related. Its 2025 date, direct appeal to social media followers, and explicit call for help seem to hint at something of the sort.
