The upcoming DCU Clayface movie has taken a new turn behind the scenes, with a fresh writer stepping in to revise the script.
Originally penned by horror maestro Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass), the film is being developed under the direction of James Watkins, known for his work on Eden Lake, The Woman in Black, and the recent Speak No Evil remake.
According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, an unnamed writer has been brought in to do “a significant pass on Mike Flanagan’s script.” Details about the new writer’s identity remain under wraps.
While there’s still no official word on who will be playing Clayface, but it’s won’t be Alan Tudyk. Despite voicing the character in Harley Quinn and Creature Commandos, James Gunn has confirmed that Tudyk won’t be involved in the live-action film.
As for other casting rumors, Daniel Radcliffe’s name had been floating around as a potential lead, but Gunn also quickly shut that down.
Unlike previous versions of the character in comics and animation, this Clayface film leans into horror, and is described as follows:
“[Clayface] is a Hollywood horror tale centering on a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay.”
This unique spin will make for a dark and unsettling addition to the DCU, especially with Watkins at the helm as his past work suggests he’s no stranger to crafting tension-filled horror and psychological thrillers.
Clayface is set to hit theaters on September 11, 2026, marking the third DCU film following Superman on July 2025 and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026.
With a new writer involved, it remains to be seen how much the script will change from Flanagan’s original vision.
