Deadpool and Wolverine almost made Fant4stic canon to the MCU! Ryan Reynolds reveals the scrapped plans for a cameo from the failed Fantastic Four reboot.
Almost every corner of the Marvel multiverse got their chance to cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine. The only exception seemed to be the failed Fantastic Four reboot, otherwise known as Fant4stic. While many thought the studio was simply ashamed of that MCU offshoot, Ryan Reynolds revealed that a large part was bringing back another The Fantastic Four star in Chris Evans.
“Yeah, that was a part of it,” Reynolds told Collider when asked if Chris Evans’ cameo played any role in not adding a Fant4stic actor. “But like that, you’re never going to get the mislead with like, Chris Evans, you know, with him doing it and the kind of license to thrill after that, with Chris.”
It’s certainly true that Chris Evans would outshine any member of the Fant4stic cast, whether he was playing a member of the Fantastic Four or not. However, it seems that wasn’t the only reason Marvel’s most embarassing reboot missed out on the fun of Deadpool and Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds admitted that the MCU’s first R-Rated film had some budget concerns.
Ryan Reynolds Speaks On His Cameo Budget
Most people assumed that Marvel gave Ryan Reynolds a blank check when it came to Deadpool and Wolverine. However, it seems the project had the restraints of any other in the MCU. Which appears to be part of the reason more than one member of the Fantastic Four didn’t show up. After all, for as cheap as Fant4stic looked as a reboot, those powers were pricey!
“:So you know, and also, we were trying to be mindful of the budget,” Reynolds continued. “We were trying to make the movie. We always understood it’s rated R, you know. It isn’t a blank check, and part of our responsibility is to return the investment that they’re making in us.”
“So I never want a budget that I don’t feel like I can make good on. And the more kind of toys you start asking for and the more kind of characters you start wanting to license, the deeper in that sort of point of no return becomes.”
It makes sense Ryan Reynolds wouldn’t want to burn his budget for Deadpool and Wolverine on a cameo from a reboot nobody saw. While it’s certainly possible for Marvel to bring back the Fant4stic for some small role in a future film, given they already have their own take on the Fantastic Four in production, it’s not likely the cast will have any substantial appearance.
