DETECTIVES THESE DAYS ARE CRAZY
Director: Rion Kujo
Studio: Liden Films
Streamer: Crunchyroll
Release Date: July 1, 2025
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Comedy, Action, Slice-of-Life

The anime adaptation of Detectives These Days Are Crazy! premiered on July 1, 2025, with Crunchyroll streaming the series. First announced in August 2024, the anime is helmed by director Rion Kujo and produced by Liden Films. Rintaro Ikeda handled scriptwriting duties, Isoroku Koga served as both character designer and chief animation director, and Tomoki Kikuya composed the soundtrack.

Naturally, as the resident achy millennial who reviewed Volume 1 of the manga (published in English by One Peace Books), I had to check out the anime premiere. And I’m glad I did.

A Banger Opening and Back Pain Solidarity

The opening theme, “Suffer” by Taiiku Okazaki, is an absolute bop. 10/10. Highly recommend—especially if you, too, suffer from back pain, neck pain, sensitive teeth, and existential dread over lost youth. The song’s J-Rock vibe reminded me of anime I enjoyed in my younger years… sigh.

Humor Dialed Up and Hammer Space Intact

Right away, the anime shifts a few things around. For example, Mashiro denies being a gyaru before Keiichiro mentions it, unlike in the manga, but it captures all the original charm and somehow makes it even funnier.

Keiichiro is still a bit of a pervert, but the anime softens the edges and makes it more palatable. And Mashiro’s hammer space? Absolutely glorious. Her ability to pull objects from seemingly nowhere is not only a delightful callback to classic animation but is even more impressive in motion. I was thrilled to see they kept Keiichiro’s “eagle eye” bit from page 19 of the manga—it made me laugh out loud both times.

Anime Tweaks: Some Hits, Some Misses

One change that disappointed me: in the scene where Keiichiro investigates a suspected cheater, the anime swaps his bulky vintage camera for a modern disposable one. I had looked forward to seeing that ridiculous relic animated! That said, the disposable camera probably makes more sense, given that Keiichiro and I are likely the same age.

Mashiro’s terrible-but-endearing posters for the detective agency also make the leap to animation, and just like in the manga, they actually help bring in new clients. One woman even shows up looking for her lost cat, though the anime omits the wild cat chase and Mashiro’s dramatic window leap. Because of that, when Keiichiro later throws her out a window, the moment doesn’t land quite as well.

Another client asks for bug extermination services (yes, really), and the anime keeps the best part: Mashiro going full Yakuza-slayer with a homemade flamethrower in a complete misunderstanding. Queen behavior.

Should You Watch It?

Overall, the anime improves upon the manga in a lot of ways, especially in pacing and humor, but it also skips over scenes that may leave anime-only viewers confused. If you’ve read the manga, the anime feels like a richer experience because you can mentally fill in those gaps. Watching it with my daughter and chatting about the differences made the whole experience even more fun.

Don’t Skip the Ending Song

The ending theme, “GORI☆GORI Feez e-Girl!!” performed by Kana Hanazawa (Mashiro) and Tomokazu Sugita (as “Jolly Old Men”), is delightfully chaotic and guaranteed to stick in your head as you queue up the next episode. (I just know it’s going to be stuck in my head for days!)

Final Thoughts

While I wasn’t sure the manga was for me, the anime won me over with its energy, creativity, and well-timed gags. If you felt lukewarm about the manga, give the anime a shot—it might just surprise you. And if you want to follow the story in print, the manga is currently being published in English by One Peace Books.

Detectives These Days Are Crazy! is now streaming on Crunchyroll.
