“I’m so sorry to share the information that Diane Noomin handed away earlier this afternoon.

“…I’m grateful to have recognized Diane and for her contributions to my record and to the comics neighborhood for the previous fifty years.

“Relaxation in peace, Diane. And thanks.”

Born in New York in 1947, Noomin emerged as a part of the San Francisco underground comix motion of the Nineteen Seventies – beginning along with her short-lived involvement with the extremely influential Wimmen’s Comix Collective, which sought to carve out an area within the intensely male-dominated scene.

Breaking away for aesthetic and political causes, Noomin took her cartooning in a route that sought to provide an sincere, usually transgressive, portrayal of womanhood – coping with points like physique picture, masturbation, and miscarriage.

Alongside good friend and fellow Wimmin’s Comix Collective tearaway Aline Kominsky, Noomin edited the ground-breaking underground anthology Twisted Sisters. Printed sporadically between 1976 and 1994, Twisted Sisters featured work by M. Ok. Brown, Phoebe Gloeckner, Julie Doucet, Mary Fleener, Carol Tyler, and lots of others. The anthology acquired two Eisner Award nominations for Greatest Anthology – in 1992 for Twisted Sisters: A Assortment of Dangerous Lady Artwork, and 1995 for the Twisted Sisters 4-issue miniseries (later collected as Twisted Sisters vol. 2: Drawing the Line).

Throughout 5 many years, Noomin has both edited or contributed work to quite a few anthologies, usually that includes her DiDi Glitz persona. Among the many underground titles her work has been featured are Arcade, Younger Lust, Weirdo, Thoughts Riot, and Actual Lady. In 2011, Fantagraphics launched Glitz-2-Go, a 40-year profession retrospective assortment of her work.

Regardless of profitable an Inkpot in 1992 – an award sometimes bestowed for a profession spanning physique of labor – Noomin was clearly not completed. Her most up-to-date and well timed work was 2019’s Drawing Energy: Girls’s Tales of Sexual Violence, Harassment, and Survival (Abrams ComicArts). An anthology impressed by the #MeToo Motion.

Drawing Power

Drawing Energy had Noomin as soon as extra take the editor’s chair to deliver collectively over 60 feminine cartoonists from throughout the globe – every telling extraordinarily private tales of assault and abuse. Among the many contributors included Emil Ferris, MariNaomi, Liana Finck, and Ebony Flowers. A portion of the earnings from the sale of the anthology went to the US Rape, Abuse & Incest Nationwide Community (RAINN). This work too, earned Noomin one other Eisner for Greatest Anthology, in 2020.

Forsaking husband and fellow underground cartoonist Invoice Griffith; a exceptional physique of labor; and an unflinching feminist affect in comics that may proceed to echo, resonate and encourage new readers and cartoonists to come back – Diane Noomin might be missed however by no means actually forgotten.

On social media buddies, colleagues, and followers expressed their grief and posted tributes.

Diane Noomin was extremely vital not only for feminism and comics however for the voices of actual girls telling uncooked, sincere tales. I am eternally grateful for her work.
