Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had one of the most troubled productions of any Marvel Cinematic Universe project. According to Disney, this trouble led to the budget ballooning by nearly $100 Million.
This budgetary bloat was discovered by a Forbes reporter, who looked through the financial statements of the UK company created to film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The sequel was originally set to have a budget of around $200 million, though statements reveal that the film spent a total of $349 million throughout its entire production. Following a $54.5 million reimbursement, this left the film with a $294.5 million bill, putting it $94.5 million over budget.
It should come as no shock to anyone familiar with the production of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that the budget inflated so much. Disney claims that this budget bloat was due to the impact of COVID-19, which certainly led to many of the issues encountered with the project. Given the controversial nature of the sequel, it’s likely a third Doctor Strange film will take a very different direction when it comes to production, even without a pandemic.
Directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Michael Waldron, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg and Rachel McAdams.
The official synopsis for the Doctor Strange sequel reads as follows: “The MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.”
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. It’s also streaming exclusively on Disney Plus.
