Is the MCU actually coming to an end? The directors of Avengers: Doomsday reveal their conclusion to the Multiverse Saga may actually be a new beginning.
There’s been a lot of talk about the MCU coming to an “end”. Some of these suggestions were in jest, with people online remarking that the franchise should be thrown out following the controversial era that was the Multiverse Saga. However, others truly believe that Avengers: Doomsday may be the beginning of the end for the current state of the universe, with Marvel potentially angling for a “soft reboot” heading into their currently unnamed saga focused on the Mutants.
This idea has mostly been ignored by the public faces of the MCU. Understandably so, as fans and industry heads alike saw how the box office for the DC Universe plummeted following James Gunn and Peter Safran announcing their own “soft reboot”. However, Joe Russo recently spoke on the idea when talking about Avengers: Doomsday, teasing the upcoming film may be a “new beginning” for the beloved franchise.
What’s compelling about these two new Avengers movies is they’re a beginning,” Joe Russo told Omelete in a recent interview. “It’s a new beginning. We told an ending story, now we’re going to tell a beginning story.”
Will Avengers: Doomsday Be A New Beginning?
While nothing is truly confirmed, this quote does seemingly confirm what fans have thought for a long time. Avengers: Doomsday will likely see the destruction of the MCU as fans know it, rebuilding it in a new form with characters like the X-Men and Fantastic Four now present in the Sacred Timeline. This would be a “new beginning” for the universe, despite much of the franchise’s past still remaining in-tact (albeit with wiggle room to retcon where needed).
However, this quote could also mean a “new beginning” narratively. It’s possible that a new grand plan is being set up for the MCU following the Multiverse Saga, with Avengers: Doomsday laying the groundwork for key players in the franchise going forward. Given the studio has lacked a truly central figure, having a character like Anthony Mackie’s Captain America or Tom Holland’s Spider-Man take that slot may be exactly what the doctor ordered.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in May 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
