Elizabeth Olsen is drawing a line in the sand when it comes to how — and where — her movies are released. The WandaVision star revealed in a new interview that she now refuses to sign onto any major studio film unless it’s guaranteed a theatrical release. Olsen said her view on streaming changed after starring in Sorry for Your Loss, a critically acclaimed but little-seen Facebook Watch series that quietly ended in 2019 after two seasons. Now, hands up — who remembers Facebook Watch was a thing? We sure don’t.
“If a movie is made independently and only sells to a streamer, then fine. But I don’t want to make something where [streaming is] the end-all. I think it’s important for people to gather as a community, to see other humans, be together in a space.”
She added that shared experiences — like moviegoing and live sports — are what keep audiences connected:
“That’s why I like sports. I think it’s really powerful for people to come together for something that they’re excited about. We don’t even audition in person anymore.”
Will Elizabeth Olsen Return to Marvel?
Of course, she’s best known for playing Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, across multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, including Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Endgame, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Her Emmy-nominated turn in WandaVision made her one of the faces of Disney’s early streaming push — but Olsen’s comments make clear she still values the big-screen experience most. Despite her newfound focus on theatrical projects, Olsen says she’s still open to returning to the MCU — but only if there’s a compelling story.
“Making the films are fun. Goofy. It’s ridiculous,. We’re grown people like children on a playground. We’re flying. We’re shooting things out of our hands. And it’s a character that I’ve gotten to return to so many times after over 10 years. It’s good to put her down and then I miss her and I want her back. I’d jump at the opportunity to be in her shoes again.”
Last month, Olsen told Dublin’s FM104 that she’d reprise the role “if there’s a good way to use her.” She praised WandaVision for finding new emotional depth in the character:
“The MCU was able to utilize the character well in interesting ways of telling stories in ways they hadn’t yet,” she said. “So if there’s a good way to use her I’m always happy to come back, however they can make that make sense.”
