Was Avengers: Endgame only impressive because of the spectacle? The film’s composer reveals what he thinks made the “portals” scene so powerful.
One of the most moving moments in, not just Avengers: Endgame, but the entire MCU was the scene where all the heroes stepped out of Doctor Strange’s portals to stand with Captain America against Thanos. Many claim this scene was only so emotional because of the spectacle in seeing so many heroes from over a decade of films come together. However, according to composer Alan Silvestri, he sees the moment as a rebirth for the First Avenger.
“The spectacle [of Portals] is ultimately overwhelming but I think it’s emotional because we’ve never seen every ounce of optimism destroyed in Captain America,” Silvestri explained in an interview with Games Radar. “In a sense, his soul was dead, he was hopeless, he had given up. We had never seen this in him before. It’s almost biblical that in his darkest moment a blessing appears – then another one, then another one.
“So, we start with basically a funeral scene – I’m burying Captain America with this trumpet! From there not only does he come back to life, but everyone in his world is coming to help him. It’s just an incredibly powerful image to have Cap rise from the dead, then be supported and surrounded by everyone to vanquish the demon. It’s a very biblical, emotional event that Joe and Anthony [Russo, directors] captured in an unbelievable way.”
While fans never truly thought that Captain America would die at that specific moment in Avengers: Endgame, there was always a question of what he could possibly do to get out of the situation. Composer Alan Silvestri nails the feeling fans felt on the head for the MCU’s most impactful moment. Understandably, of course, given he’s the one who composed it!
The Impact Of Avengers: Endgame On The MCU
Depending on who you ask, the portals scene in Avengers: Endgame could be seen as the moment that killed the MCU, or the moment that gave it new life. After that scene, everyone expected every project to have a some giant crossover, as if every corner of the universe was now unified after Captain America’s rebirth. This left many fans disappointed in their speculation, With even their wildest fan theories of Phase 4 crossovers not coming to life.

So just as Steve Rogers regained hope in that moment, there may be time yet for fans to regain their hope in the new heroes of the Marvel Universe.
