Are the Eternals truly gone for good? Gemma Chan gives her thoughts on if fans can expect Sersi to return to the MCU anytime soon.
Eternals is truly one of the saddest stories in the MCU. Not regarding its plot, but regarding its production. Everything was going right for the film. It was being helmed by Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao. It had a star-studded cast including Gemma Chan and Selma Hayek. The project was even based on a comic book helmed by the legend Jack Kirby. However, due to issues like an inflated budget and miscast expectations, the film ended up being one of the biggest flops in MCU history.
This has left fans wondering if the story of the Eternals will manage to live on in other projects, or if it’ll simply be forgotten in the waste basket of the MCU. The only character to make a proper return since the film was Kingo in What If…?. There was some hope that Gemma Chan’s Sersi could appear in Blade alongside the Black Knight, but the film’s rocky production has left those hopes on the wayside as well.
Gemma Chan Breaks Silence On Sersi
The topic of Sersi’s future in the MCU was recently broached in an interview with Gemma Chan on ComicBook.com. Sadly, hope doesn’t seem too high for Eternals fans. When asked if there were any plans for her to make her return for the franchise, Chan admitted that actors are some of the last people to get the call, but she does believe there is some unfinished business.
“You never know. We’re often the last people to find out. I don’t know, I’m keeping the faith. I feel like there’s unfinished business there and there’s more story to tell, but we’ll see.”
It’s certainly true that there’s unfinished business with the Eternals in the MCU. For as much as fans like to clown on the Celestial in the ocean never being addressed, the giant LIVING Celestial plucking heroes off the planet is something that should at least be mentioned in passing at some point in the future. So even if a proper sequel is never made, fans can at least have some hope that Gemma Chan may briefly appear as Sersi to wrap that storyline up.
