Eternals To Return In The MCU’s Mutant Saga

Are the Eternals finally making their return? The latest MCU rumor suggests that the franchise’s forgotten team may play a role in the Mutant Saga.

Eternals is one of the true tragedies of the MCU. The film was a swing in a more auteur direction for the franchise, bringing on Oscar winner Chloe Zhao to helm the epic. Sadly, it absolutely bombed at the box office and was eviscerated online. This left hope for the characters to return at an all time low. This was especially a shame as, despite the movie being divisive, it has gone on to be a cult favorite among some fans of the franchise.

However, it seems the Eternals may not be cooked just yet. During a recent rumor round-up on The Cosmic Circus, entertainment reporter Alex Perez revealed that the team isn’t “done for,” and that their absence will be explained in the upcoming Mutant Saga. So while it’s not likely that their film will get a sequel anytime soon, it’s possible that the members of the team may finally be making their long-awaited return to the silver screen.

Will The Eternals Play A Role In The Mutant Saga?

The obvious corner fans turn to when asking how the Eternals could play a role in the Mutant Saga is the Celestials. Yet given what fans know about the beings’ place in the MCU, it’s hard to imagine how that story could line up with the X-Men. That is, until one remembers that Apocalypse was recruited by the Celestials to ensure that evolution takes its “natural course”, serving as the character’s latest origin in the comics.

If this rumor is true, it seems that the Marvel is planning for two flops to return in the Mutant Saga: Apocalypse and the Eternals. Certainly a bold move given the current cultural opinions on the MCU. However, given how the next season of X-Men ’97 seems to be a trial run for En Sabah Nur with modern audiences, it may be the best chance the studio has at making either of these characters work anytime soon.
