New details are coming out about one of the most infamous fights in Hollywood — JAY-Z vs. Solange Knowles.
Let’s go back all the way back to 2014. Security footage revealed that, following a Met Gala afterparty that year, Solange attacked her brother-in-law in an elevator. She was pushing and shoving JAY-Z into the corner as security tried to get her off him – all while Beyoncé stood back and did not intervene once in the fight. The only thing she did was exchange a few words with her sister.
The video quickly went viral after it leaked, sparking theories about what happened. One of which purported Solange became pissed off over JAY-Z’s alleged affair with fashion designer Rachel Roy. None of them confirmed the theory. However, Beyoncé fueled the rumors when she dropped the album Lemonade about JAY-Z’s alleged cheating. It even included the song Sorry, featuring lyrics about her husband’s alleged mistress, “Becky with the good hair.” Many speculated it was a reference to Rachel, and she only dug herself into deeper hole when she captioned a post, “Good hair don’t care.” She later said the comment was misconstrued, though. Hmm.

Meanwhile, JAY-Z and Solange made up after the fight. They released a joint statement, saying they had “apologized to each other” and moved on from the situation as a “united family.” All is seemingly well between them now. But the mystery of what sparked the incident was never solved… until maybe now!
Over a decade after the infamous fight, fashion designer Oscar G. Lopez is spilling what he claims is the real reason behind it! The 52-year-old designed the dress Rachel wore for the Met Gala in 2014 after he won Season 1 of the Project Runway spinoff Under the Gunn. Take a look at it (below):
Oscar claimed to Dailymail.com on Thursday that Rachel ran into JAY-Z at the event. The rapper allegedly complimented her black lace gown, and Solange was not happy about it. The designer said:
“I think that Jay complimented her about the gown and Beyoncé’s sister felt that it was not proper, so it was a kind of a drama there.”
So, he says, it triggered the meltdown. Hmm. If true, that only fuels the affair rumors about JAY-Z and Rachel more. Because why would a compliment upset Solange so much that she attacked the 56-year-old record executive? Yes, perhaps she didn’t like her sister’s hubby giving attention to another woman. But is that really enough to start a physical fight? It still feels like there’s more to the story…
Ultimately, Oscar said he and Rachel laughed off the drama because it was “so silly” since she was once married to JAY’s former pal and business partner Damon Dash. Rachel also interned at Rocawear, JAY-Z and Damon’s fashion label, before becoming the creative director of the women’s and children’s lines. So, it wasn’t like Rachel didn’t know him. Whether or not they were more than platonic pals? Oscar isn’t saying…
Instead, he noted that the scandal worked out in his favor:
“Any press is good press. It’s good that people talk about you. Sometimes you benefit from a scandal, not even being part of it in a very direct way. Let’s just call it a collateral damage. It was meant to be.”
Funny enough, his big moment was almost ruined because Rachel showed up late and was unable to get properly photographed on the red carpet. Barely anyone saw her look at first. But when that elevator drama exploded, whew, he said that “the dress was all over the news.” It was good for business. At least for him.
