“It’ quite innocent.” Get ready for some debaucherous 80s fun! Hulu has unveiled a quick teaser trailer for an upcoming series titled Rivals, adapted from the book of the same name written by Dame Jilly Cooper. Set within the social elite of 1980s England, Rivals stars Alex Hassell as Rupert Campbell-Black, an ex-Olympian & Member of Parliament who is described as “an incorrigible rake, and dangerously charismatic.” David Tennant in turn plays Lord Tony Baddingham, controller of Corinium Television — and Rupert’s single-mindedly ambitious and egotistical foe. Set against the backdrop of the drama, excess, and shocking antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England, Rivals delves headfirst into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986 – where it’s every man and woman for themselves. This TV series also stars Bella Maclean as Taggie O’Hara, Katherine Parkinson as Lizzie, Nafessa Williams as Cameron Cook, Emily Atack as Sarah Stratton, Catriona Chandler as Caitlin O’Hara, with Oliver Chris, Danny Dyer, Rufus Jones, Lisa McGrillis, Luke Pasqualino, Claire Rushbrook, and Victoria Smurfit. Looks like Succession but for England instead, with all the usual mayhem from the 80s creeping into every frame.
Here’s the first look teaser trailer for Hulu’s series Rivals, direct from Hulu’s YouTube:
Into the cut-throat world of Corinium television comes Declan O’Hara, a mega-star of great glamour and integrity with a radiant feckless wife, a son and two teenage daughters. Living rather too closely across the valley is Rupert Campbell-Black, divorced and as dissolute as ever, and now the Tory Minister for Sport. Declan needs only a few days at Corinium to realise the Managing Director, Lord Baddingham, is a crook who has recruited him merely to help retain the franchise for Corinium. Baddingham has also enticed Cameron Cook, a gorgeous but domineering woman executive, to produce Declan’s programme. Declan and Cameron detest each other, provoking a storm of controversy into which Rupert plunges with his usual abandon. As a rival group emerges to pitch for the franchise, reputations ripen and decline, true love blossoms and burns, marriages are made and shattered, and sex raises its (delicious) head at almost every throw as, in bed and boardroom, the race is on to capture the Cotswold Crown. “Beg your pardon.”
Rivals is a series created by Happy Prince, which is part of ITV Studios. With writing by Sophie Goodhart, Marek Horn, Mimi Hare, Clare Naylor, Dare Aiyegbayo, and Kefi Chadwick. Produced by Eliza Mellor. Executive produced by Dominic Treadwell-Collins, Alexander Lamb, Felicity Blunt, Laura Wade, Cooper, & Lee Mason. Hulu will debut this Rivals series streaming on Hulu sometime later in 2024 – stay tuned for a final date. Who wants to watch?
