For her new role We Live In Time, Florence Pugh decided to shave her head.

She debuted her clean-shaven look at the 2023 Met Gala complete with a stunning headpiece, which caught the attention of fans online.

“I think there was this weird rumour on the internet saying that I did it to take back my identity, which is something I’ve never said in my entire life,” she tells Vanity Fair in a new interview.

According to the actress, there was no personal reason for the haircut and it was simply her way of embracing the character.

At one point in the plot, Pugh’s character Almut is diagnosed with cancer and begins to undergo treatment.

For Pugh, shaving her head felt like the right move to immerse herself in Almut’s story.

According to Vanity Fair, the film’s director John Crowley suggested wigs and other hairpieces could be used instead but Pugh was determined to commit fully to her character’s journey.

“I just stopped him mid-sentence and I was like, ‘John, no one can play a character like this in a movie like this and not do the thing that is needed to be done,’ ” she said.

“And if you don’t want to do it, I believe that you shouldn’t be doing a story like this.”

Pugh also addressed the haircut last year after debuting the look at the Met Gala, but at the time she gave a different explanation.

“I purposefully chose to look like that. I wanted vanity out of the picture,” the Oppenheimer actor star told Radio Times.

”Hollywood is very glamorous – especially for women – and it’s hard for an audience to see past that.”

Pugh’s relationship with Hollywood’s unrealistic beauty standards is something she’s spoken about on several occasions.

In January last year she told Vogue: “We are human, we are bodies”.

“Yes, I can put makeup on and look good for a premiere. But at the end of the day. I still have hair on the top of my lip and I still smell after a workout and I still get spots when I’m stressed.”
