Former Bethesda Dev Is Confident Starfield’s Sequel Will Be Exactly What Everyone Wanted In The First Place

Starfield may have stumbled when it launched, but someone with plenty of experience working with Bethesda is confident the studio’s next attempt at the game will be significantly better. As is the case with many video game franchises, the sequel is generally better than the original, especially when the creative team has the right feedback and a larger budget to tweak everything that didn’t work and enhance all the aspects that did. In the case of Starfield, one can only hope that the game has garnered enough support to warrant a second attempt.

Speaking to VideoGamer, former Bethesda designer Bruce Nesmith, who worked on games like Fallout 3, Fallout 4, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, spoke about Starfield‘s potential as a growing franchise, noting that he’s particularly excited to play a sequel:

“I’m looking forward to Starfield 2. I
think it’s going to be one hell of a game because it’s going to address a lot of the things people are saying
, ‘We’re quite there. We’re missing a little bit.’ It will be able to take what’s in there right now and put in a lot of new stuff and fix a lot of those problems.”

Nesmith noted that when he was involved in the production of Skyrim, the team was lucky enough to have Oblivion as a reference point for areas that needed improvement. The designer notes that Starfield has suffered in the way many original IPs have, suggesting a sequel will likely give users the game they wanted all along.

Is Starfield Getting A Sequel?

Nesmith speaks about a Starfield sequel as though it’s definitely happening but at the time of writing, Bethesda has yet to announce any formal plans for a follow-up. After the Shattered Space expansion, which received mixed reviews from fans and critics, the studio has confirmed that it’s working on more content, including a second paid-for DLC. This isn’t to say that a sequel is impossible, but given Bethesda’s slate of projects, one has to imagine that it’s not a priority right now.

Beyond the fact that the developer is still working on growing Starfield with content updates and patches, it’s widely believed that its next core project is The Elder Scrolls 6. Announced in 2018, fans have waited desperately for some kind of update on the fantasy RPG but Bethesda has yet to share any concrete information beyond a brief reveal trailer. There’s also been talk about a possible Fallout 5 but this has yet to be formally confirmed.

If It Gets One

I think the problem with Starfield is that it tripped over itself trying to be everything for everyone rather than picking a singular vision and going all in on it. There are flashes of brilliance in the experience; The ship-building system is excellent and the New Game+ feature is very creative. Unfortunately, it’s bogged down by poor quest design, an abundance of loading screens, and boring writing; One has to imagine that all of these issues can be fixed in a sequel if Bethesda opts to go that route.
