'Foundation' Season 3 Just Gave Us Demerzel's Shocking Robot Secret - Sunburst Viral- Latest News on Celebrities, gossip, TV, music and movies

Episode 4 of AppleTV+’s hit sci-fi show Foundation, “The Stress of Her Regard,” was a revelation in many ways in the development of several of the main characters. One of those is Demerzel (Laura Birn), who has an emotionally charged conversation with Zephyr Vorellis (Rebecca Ineson) in the rock garden that uncovers something that audiences were not expecting and makes her a much more complex player moving forward. Demerzel’s character arc in Season 3 is already one of the most emotionally torn as she wrestles with her programming allegiance to Empire while having overwhelming feelings that the Cleonic dynasty has outlived its usefulness and is ripe for replacement. That inner conflict comes to a head in a gripping exchange in the opening sequence of the latest episode, and reveals Demerzel’s shocking role in beginning the current crisis and looming war.

What Did Demerzel Reveal to Zephyr in the Opening Scene of ‘Foundation’ Episode 4?

Episode 4 begins with Demerzel having a revealing conversation with her confidante, Zephyr Vorellis. Almost immediately, Demerzel admits to Zephyr that over 300 years ago, during Season 1, she was the one who provided the bombs to the warring Thespins and Anacreons who ended up using them to destroy the Star Bridge, which killed millions of innocent Trantorians. It was the opening salvo in what is now the war between Empire and the Foundation as they are now approaching the looming third crisis involving The Mule and the frayed future of the Prime Radiant. ‘

Demerzel claims that she did what she did for the greater good of Empire, vis-à-vis keeping Hari Seldon alive as a foe for the Cleonic dynasty, knowing that they would ban him and his followers to Terminus. But what she cannot reconcile is how she could have violated Asimov’s first and most important of the three laws of robotics and brought harm to humans. For a robot, this strikes at the very core of its existence and can cause it to have to recalibrate everything it has known and been governed by since its inception.

Demerzel Is Facing an Existential Crisis and Doesn’t Know How to Handle It on ‘Foundation’

When Zephyr pushes back against Demerzel, suggesting that her actions indicate she is in the process of becoming more human than robot, it doesn’t go over well. Demerzel has existed for thousands of years, knowing only how to conduct herself as curator to the Cleonic dynasty and caretaker of Empire, according to her strict Asimovian three-law programming. It is what has kept her outside the confusion of human emotion and free to exist outside of human circles. Zephyr is unaware that her thoughts are sending Demerzel’s already existential dilemma into a frenzy of conflicted consciousness.

But Zephyr, thinking she is supporting Demerzel by pointing out that her becoming more human is her desired evolution, unwittingly pushes the robot to a breaking point, and she lashes out at Zephyr. Demerzel turns abruptly and rips her face down the middle, revealing the plates and wiring of a droid as her voice bellows with a threatening metallic roar. She reminds Zephyr of what she really is, and it is far from being human. It is a frightening look at the normally reserved droid as she goes full “Terminator” mode on poor Zephyr, who is unaware of Demerzel’s painful battle. Zephyr scurries away from the rock garden in fear.

Demerzel’s Face Indicates That She Is Fighting a Battle She Can’t Win

We have seen Demerzel teetering toward the end of Season 2 and now through the first three episodes of Season 3. She is at war with herself, and she continues to spiral downward, trying to fight what appears to be a complete abandonment of her coding and becoming a being controlled more by emotion.

Birn has been fascinating in the role as her character has to convey an enormous amount of inner turmoil with a minimalist approach of being bound by robotics. Her facial ticks and furrowed brow are subtle signs that she is suffering, but even as she does, she is becoming a major threat to both Empire and the Second Foundation. She must execute all of this while maintaining an emotionless exterior that is incapable of being fazed by anything. Her storyline has been one of the most interesting on Foundation, and will undoubtedly be worth following as she will be a key player moving forward as a unilateral force outside of Cleonic orders.
