Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s strand in which, each fortnight, we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films landing success in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are appearing in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track… So, we’re going to do the hard work for you.
This week, we’re taking a breather and looking back at five of the best Breakouts from the year, with the titles on offer ranging from meditations of fatherhood in France to honor killings in the Middle East. We will be back with a new Breakout in two weeks, so make sure to return, but for now, enjoy the voyage to August.

The year began in France, where wildlife photographer and filmmaker Vincent Munier’s gentle feature documentary Whispers in the Woods had unexpectedly hit one million spectators in cinemas. The Paprika Films pic Munier saw Munier returns to his native Vosges in northeastern France, revisiting the forests and mountains where he first started photographing animals as a teenager, and simultaneously exploring his relationships with his father, who cultivated his love of nature’s beauty, and son, to whom he passed on the gift. “It’s the story of the passing down of knowledge between a grandfather, the father, and the grandson,” Munier told us. “It’s about transmission.”
‘The Return‘ (Ukraine) – March

As the war in Ukraine passed four years, we put the spotlight on The Return, a darkly comic show from the country that, in collaboration with the nation’s war veterans, attempted to find lightness in dark while remind ingeveryone of the ongoing violence in Eastern Europe. The ICTV2 show follows a wounded soldier, Oleksandr Krechet, who winds up back in Kyiv. Complications with medical clearance and a promise made to his fallen comrade force him to remain in the Ukrainian capital despite his desire to get back to the frontline. More than 50% of the cast of The Return are war veterans or active service members, making it unique in world television.

Billed as Norway’s answer to The Pitt, Still Breathing is a genuine local phenomenon in the Scandinavian country. We introduced readers to the hot medical series in the spring. Featuring a group of ambitious interns in a high-pressure public hospital, Still Breathing’s debut in April was Norwegian pubcaster NRK‘s biggest-ever opening for a drama outside of the pubcaster’s fruitful festival season shows. The eight-part series followed a group of interns working in an overstretched hospital in the middle of Norway, and has been taken out to the international market by DR Sales.
‘Fadia‘ (Israel) – June

Inspired by Shakespeare and other great playwrights, Nazareth-based Palestinian-Israeli auteur and actor living Shady Srour’s mini-series Fadia dealt with honor killings, while saying plenty more about society. It received a rapturous reception at the recent Monte-Carlo TV Festival, winning a trio of awards. Starring Yara Elham Jarrar and for Israeli-Arab language network Makan TV, Fadia follows the titular character, who left for dead by family in the name of honor but rescued by neighbors, who risk everything to ensure her continued safety.
