George Lucas’ Long-Lost STAR WARSA DETOURS is Finally Being Released After 14 Years — GeekTyrant

Sometimes Star Wars surprises fans in ways no one sees coming, and this one might be one of the coolest unnexpected surprises to come out of San Diego Comic-Con.

While everyone expected updates on upcoming movies, TV shows, and collectibles, few could’ve predicted that George Lucas would have one last Star Wars project waiting in the wings 14 years after selling Lucasfilm to Disney.

That’s exactly what happened during the Lucas Museum panel, where it was revealed that Star Wars Detours, the long-lost animated comedy series created by George Lucas, Seth Green, and Matthew Senreich, is finally going to be shown to the public.

There is one pretty significant catch, though. Instead of arriving on Disney+, getting a Blu-ray release, or appearing on another streaming platform, episodes of Detours will be screened exclusively at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. That means fans who want to finally see this mythical Star Wars series are going to have to make the trip to the museum.

Even with that limitation, this is still awesome news. For years, Star Wars Detours has been one of those legendary “what could’ve been” projects that fans have talked about but never actually got to experience.

The series was announced back at Star Wars Celebration in 2012 and promised something completely different from anything else in the franchise.

Rather than another epic saga filled with Jedi, Sith, and galaxy-changing stakes, Detours leaned fully into comedy. The animated series was designed as a parody of the Star Wars universe, poking fun at familiar characters and iconic moments while still celebrating everything fans love about the galaxy far, far away.

Unfortunately, shortly after the series was announced, Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney. As the company reshaped the future of the franchise, Detours no longer fit into the plans for the new era of Star Wars, and the show was shelved before audiences ever got the chance to see it.

That was disappointing because it would’ve been fascinating to watch Star Wars embrace a full-on comedy series. The franchise has always had funny moments, but it’s never really committed to becoming an outright parody.

Detours looked like it would’ve offered something refreshingly different while still coming from people who genuinely loved the universe they were having fun with.

These episodes have been sitting on a shelf for well over a decade. They were completed, ready to go, and then simply disappeared. Fans have spent years wondering how characters like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia, Obi-Wan, and others would be portrayed in this comedic alternate take on Star Wars.

Now, after all these years, people will finally get to experience something that many assumed would remain locked away forever.

There’s also something fitting about Lucas’ final Star Wars project finding its home inside the Lucas Museum rather than another massive streaming service. It almost feels like a piece of creative history being preserved where it belongs.

Of course, it’s hard not to hope this eventually leads to a wider release because there are countless fans around the world who would love the opportunity to watch these episodes without having to travel.

Still, considering that Star Wars Detours was once thought to be gone forever, it’s hard to complain too much.

Personally, I can’t wait to finally see what Lucas, Green, and Senreich created all those years ago. There’s something incredibly fun about discovering a “new” Star Wars series that was actually finished more than a decade ago.

It’s almost like opening a time capsule from a completely different era of the franchise. Whether the jokes all land or not almost doesn’t matter. The chance to finally watch this long-lost series feels like a gift for longtime fans who have been curious about it ever since it vanished.
