  • Peter David’s dialysis costs reach $2,230 weekly, with a GoFundMe goal set at $300,000.
  • Generous backers include comic industry names, contributing thousands to David’s fund.

Kathleen David, wife of novelist, comic book writer and screenwriter Peter David, posted to GoFundMe. “Apparently, as of January 1, 2024, We have to pay out of pocket for Peter’s Dialysis, which he needs to live. It is an insurance morass that I am climbing through trying to get insurance to pick up the ball. Just for a breakdown on the expense. One session is $743 (USD), and he needs three a week, making it 2229 or, say, 2230 because it is easier for me to wrap my head around. I have been paying for it because I want Peter to live. But the well is dry, and I haven’t had much luck with the collectables recently. I am coming to you and asking for your help, which you have so graciously given us during the last year and three months.” She has currently raised $256,190 of a $300,000 target. Stanford Brown donated $4000,  Todd Nauck donated $2250, John Ordover, Humberto Ramos, Maggie Thompson, Dawn Nuack, and Zeb Wells gave $2000, and Jeff Keeler, Mark Evanier, Philip Lord, Michael Einhorn, Paul Levitz, Tony Lee, Candace Kalish, Mark Guggenheim, Laura Mustard and Jamie Graham all gave $1000 each.
Jenn Graves, sister of comic book writer Brett Lewis, posted her own GoFundMe, saying, “Many of you know that Brett was assaulted in 2009 and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He still has after effects and financial burden from that. At some point on the night of January 14th, Brett lost consciousness and was found unresponsive with a swollen head from a brain bleed the next morning. He was rushed to a hospital in Culver City, but his injury was severe enough that he was transferred to a top Neuro Critical Care Unit in Los Angeles. By Wednesday, Brett had to have an emergency hemicraniectomy. Basically, he had a good sized piece of his skull removed in order to drain the massive blood clot that had formed. He has just been taken off a ventilator and is breathing on his own, which is great. Obviously Brett won’t be able to work for some time. At this point the extent of the damage is unclear. What we do know is that after leaving the hospital he’ll be at an acute rehab facility, followed by 24/7 home care before a second skull surgery in 2-3 months. Brett’s family and loved ones on the East Coast are supporting him from afar. But he will have a major financial burden after this.” She has currently raised $46,506 of a$100,000 target. Artist Amanda LaPalme donated $10,000, Stanford Brown gave $2000 and there were $1000 donations from Will Dennis, Tessa Weitzman, and Jack Mahan,
