VIZ Media has announced its next major anime project: a co-production of Hirayasumi, the award-winning manga by Keigo Shinzo. Partnering with Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions Co., Ltd., this marks a milestone moment in VIZ’s expanding anime portfolio and underscores its commitment to spotlighting Japan’s most celebrated creators on a global scale.
Animation will be produced by Production +h., the acclaimed studio behind The Orbital Children and Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction, signaling high expectations for Hirayasumi‘s debut on screen.
First serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits in 2021, Hirayasumi won over critics and readers alike with its quietly powerful storytelling and emotionally resonant artwork. VIZ brought the series to English-speaking audiences in May 2024, and it has since become one of the most talked-about slice-of-life manga in recent memory. With over 1.1 million copies in circulation globally and six English-language volumes released, Hirayasumi continues to gain momentum as a breakout hit.
Adding to its growing legacy, a live-action adaptation of the series has also been announced, further cementing its cultural impact.
“I’m so happy to hear it’s being adapted into an anime and a drama!” said creator Keigo Shinzo. “I’m really looking forward to seeing both shows!”
At the heart of Hirayasumi is 29-year-old Hiroto Ikuta—a laid-back, aimless man with no job, no girlfriend, and no ambitions… and no problem with any of that. While others wrestle with grief, anxiety, and the pressures of adulthood, Hiroto simply does his best to live in the moment.
Additional information about the anime’s premiere date and international rollout will be announced in the coming months.
