What is the Legacy of Yellowstone?
A neo-Western series, the story of Yellowstone takes place in present-day Montana, where John Dutton Jr. (Kevin Costner), a sixth-generation Dutton family patriarch, reigns over the massive titular ranch, among other properties adjoining the Yellowstone National Park and the Broken Rock Native Reservation. The seven-season-long drama revolves around a powerful family, their history in the region, and how they managed to stay at the top. The gritty, epic saga garnered widespread popularity and critical acclaim and became an explosive hit for the network. Since its premiere in 2018, the neo-Western drama has consistently risen in the ratings and viewership, with phenomenal success in the final season, when Yellowstone Season 5 broke all records with 13.1 million viewers for the finale.Writer of gritty films like Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River, Sheridan made a lasting impression with Yellowstone, reviving the Western genre for television. During its run, the popularity of the Western also encouraged spin-offs and prequels, all of which joined the widespread popularity of the parent show. What can be easily called Sheridan’s magnum opus, Yellowstone established a legacy that is expected to continue in the coming years, with an all-new spin-off starring series leads Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser in the works.
Other Shows in the Yellowstone Universe You Can Watch
The Dutton family and their associated characters have a long history, and the show’s prequels retrace the family’s journey back to the late 19th century. If you have already watched Yellowstone, then you might also want to watch other stories in the Yellowstone universe, featuring a star-studded cast and major events in American history.
1883
The first spin-off of Yellowstone, 1883 serves as a prequel series and follows the origin story of the Dutton family. Also created by Sheridan, the period drama is set 125 years before the plot of Yellowstone and takes us back to the first generation of the Duttons who owned the ranch in Montana. James Dutton (Tim McGraw), a captain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and his wife, Margaret (Faith Hill), escape the impoverished southern states and migrate to the Great Plains to build a new and better life in Montana, setting up the Yellowstone ranch and its legacy which would eventually be owned by their great-grandson, John Dutton III (Costner). 1883 also stars Sam Elliott, Isabel May, and LaMonica Garrett in main roles, with a star-studded rotating guest cast featuring Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Billy Bob Thornton, and Graham Greene. Both McGraw and Hill reprise their respective roles in Yellowstone Season 4, as a part of a flashback to family history. Premiered in 2021, 1883 became more successful than Yellowstone at the time and clocked record-breaking ratings. Essentially a period drama, 1883 takes you on a journey through the Old West accompanied by great cinematography and music, which earned the series a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
1923
The second series in the Yellowstone universe, 1923 marks a sequel to 1883 and a second prequel to Yellowstone. Set 40 years after the events of 1883, 1923 focus on Jacob, older brother of James Dutton (McGraw) and family patriarch, and his wife, Cara, as the couple struggles for their home and family onset of the Great Depression. 1923’s star power surpasses that of both Yellowstone and 1883 with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren starring as the protagonists, Jacob and Cara, alongside Jerome Flynn, Timothy Dalton, and Brandon Sklenar in major roles. Isabel May reprises her role from 1883 as Elsa Dutton, daughter of James and Margaret, and serves as the narrator for 1923. Released in 2022, 1923’s premiere became the biggest debut on Paramount+, breaking all records of both its predecessors, as well as Sheridan’s other shows like Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown, both of which were well acclaimed. 1923 has been greenlighted for a second season, set to premiere in February 2025.

The Madison
Written and created by Sheridan, The Madison is the latest entrant in the Yellowstone universe and marks the third spin-off series in the franchise and a sequel to Yellowstone. The Madison will move away from digging further into the past and look at the present-day lives of the McIntosh family. The neo-Western follows Stacy Clyburn, a wealthy matriarch and a New York City native, who moves her family from the urban jungle to the rolling plains of Madison River Valley in Montana after her husband and brother-in-law suffer a tragic death in a plane crash. Announced in 2024, The Madison is set to star Michelle Pfeiffer as the family matriarch, Stacy, and Suits star Patrick J. Adams as Russell McIntosh, her son-in-law, with Elle Chapman, Matthew Fox, Beau Garrett, and Amiah Miller in various roles. Set to arrive in 2025, The Madison is billed to be a more emotional family drama in a “heartfelt study of grief and human connection,” as the New Yorkers navigate loss, trauma, and a new life in the Great Plains.
