Everyone thinks they know the true story of one of the most publicized true crime scandals of the 21st century, but The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox boasts a new perspective on the international scandal. In Hulu’s new series, Tell Me Lies star Grace Van Patten plays the titular character, who was tried for murder in 2007. While studying abroad in Italy, Amanda Knox came under fire when her roommate, Meredith Kercher, was murdered. The press and authorities quickly eyed Knox with suspicion because of her seemingly casual approach to the tragedy. She and her Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were seen showing public displays of affection during the investigation, which turned the public against the two. Knox was ultimately convicted of the crime, which was later appealed and overturned. This is a familiar case for many, but Van Patten told People Magazine that there may be some surprises when the limited series airs.
“I mean, I thought I knew a good amount, and it wasn’t even close to the twists and turns that happened throughout those years,” Van Patten told the outlet. “It’s new information that the public does not know — especially in that last episode.” This is another reason why The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is such an exciting new endeavor. The real story has been debated for almost two decades, and Knox herself finally gets a chance to reclaim the narrative.
Amanda Knox Has Been Painted as a Villain For a Long Time
In the follow-up to the case, Amanda Knox had been thrown in with other true crime villains such as Casey Anthony, but this reputation was undeserved. At a time when news happened in the tabloids, the press immediately turned on Knox without any evidence. Many honed in on her sexual activities as a sign of guilt, which eventually convicted her, as opposed to any existence of tangible evidence.
Knox quickly became scrutinized by the Italian police, which made it even more difficult because of the language barrier. Interrogated for days, Knox ultimately signed a confession, but no DNA evidence implicated her. Evidence found at the scene instead pointed to Rudy Guede as the killer. After serving two years in prison, Knox was eventually acquitted, but that didn’t repair her tarnished name. She has spent the last several years trying to rehabilitate her image, even though she remains just one out of many in an epidemic of false confessors. Knox participated in the Netflix documentary aptly titled Amanda Knox, but this would be the first time a fictionalized version of her story would set the record straight, as opposed to grabbing for headlines, as the Lifetime film starring Hayden Panettiere. Van Patten talked to her extensively to prepare for the role, implying that this would be the version of true events everyone has been waiting for.
Grace Van Patten Transforms In ‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox’
Grave Van Patten has had a relationship with Hulu for many years, thanks to her role in the scandalous and steamy drama, Tell Me Lies. The performer plays Lucy, who is one half of a toxic couple who toy with each other in their college years and in the present day. However, this is the first instance that Van Patten is taking on the role of a real-life figure. Taking on this endeavor required Van Patten to dye her hair and wear blue contacts to resemble Amanda Knox, resulting in an astonishing transformation. She melts into the persona of the real person, who is a far cry from the narcissistic Lucy Albright. The lynchpin of the performance, however,is is the close communication that Van Patten had with Knox throughout the entire process.
“How willing [Knox] was to talk to me and trust me, it felt very beautiful and emotional because of how people have created this narrative of her whole life,” Van Patten told People. She also emphasized that Knox had been mischaracterized by the media at the time, which was the key to her downfall in the press. Knox had been depicted as a promiscuous monster, which only benefited the authorities’ narrative. The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox will present the facts to the best of its ability, showing a new side of the persona. Fans can watch this gripping series when it airs on Hulu on August 20.
