“‘Cause I’m no ordinary girl… I’m from the deep blue underworld.”

Do these words bring back any hint of nostalgia? Any visions of mermaids? Ha!

Anyone who grew up in the nineties and early 2000s will instantly recognise these lyrics as the theme song of the now-iconic show, H2O: Just Add Water, the hit Australian drama and fantasy series that ran from 2006 to 2010.

The show made instant stars out of its main cast; with the lineup including Phoebe Tonkin, Claire Holt, Cariba Heine, Indiana Evans and Luke Mitchell.

Watch the video above.

It followed the lives of three high-school students whose lives are transformed as they become mermaids – a single drop of water could make them magically transform into the mystical creature, complete with oversized – and colourful – scaled tails.

So what exactly happened to the cast? Tonkin, 35, and Holt, 36, went on to star in the hugely successful The CW supernatural show, The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off, The Originals.

Heine and Mitchell appeared on Home and Away, while Heine appeared opposite Kiefer Sutherland in Designated Designer.

Evans, now 34, has some incredible acting credits to her name, including 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, the 2015 drama Secrets and Lies (co-starring Ryan Phillippe), and 2012’s Blue Lagoon: The Awakening, which also starred Denise Richards and Brenton Thwaites.

But fans already knew her from her time on Home and Away as Matilda Hunter, who she portrayed on the long-running soap from 2004 to 2008, a role which saw her get nominated for awards including a Logie and a Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award.

During her time on the show, she briefly dated fellow castmate and Home and Away star Lincoln Lewis. Around the time of H2O, the show she joined in 2009, she was linked to co-star Angus McLaren who played Lewis McCartney.

She is now starring in the TV thriller and crime drama, A Remarkable Place to Die, which also stars beloved New Zealand-born actress Rebecca Gibney.

She recently told 9honey Celebrity that because the show H2O: Just Add Water was so iconic and popular, she still gets recognised to this day while out and about for her portrayal of Isabella ‘Bella’ Hartley.

Bella was a main character in season three – replacing Holt as a main mermaid. Holt went off to star in a film at the time.

“I do still get recognised for H2O, despite it being so long ago,” Evans told 9honey Celebrity.

She joined the show as the mermaid character Bella in 2009 and was on the hit show until it’s final year on air.

She says that in fact, even younger fans are starting to watch and love the show, despite it airing more than a decade ago.

“What really surprises me is when someone quite young recognises me,” she admits.

“I’m thinking, ‘You’re way too young to have watched the show when it aired’. I guess it must live on via streaming, and people continue to find it.

“It’s always a lovely interaction meeting people who love the show. They share that it was a part of their childhood, so it means a lot to them.”

She added that she appreciates the cult-status of the show and its legacy to this day.

“It’s nice to have been a part of that,” she said.

On the show, her character was a keen singer and fans will remember her performances.

Evans actually sang on the soundtrack for the show.

About her new show, A Remarkable Place to Die, she told 9Entertainment: “I’m excited to see everyone follow the overarching mystery of the series.”

Evans recently reflected on her incredible career and admitted to TV Week that there’s been times she’s considered “switching careers”.

“Because I started doing it [acting] as a kid, you do have moments where you think about switching careers or doing something else, as the auditioning over and over can get you down,” the former All Saints actress admitted to the publication.

She’s kept herself off social media – and rarely does a red carpet – and said a lot of people impersonate her online, which is also a hard notion to grasp.

The actress also spoke about working with fellow former Home and Away star Chris Hemsworth in Thor.

“It was great, because Chris was exactly the same,” she mused.
