The HBO Max “coming in 2026” trailer dropped, and we have a peek at the next season of House of the Dragon, along with one of the coolest armies the Game of Thrones universe has ever produced. The recent trailer for HBO Max’s 2026 revealed a few short but exciting scenes from the upcoming House of the Dragon season 3.
We’ve seen a lot of awesome armies in the Game of Thrones universe. The massive Dothraki horde, the perfectly trained Unsullied, the ornately armored Tyrells, and the lock-step Targaryens are just some of the cool forces we’ve seen, but the Winter Wolves will be the coolest by far.
Who Are The Winter Wolves In House Of The Dragon Season 3?
The Winter Wolves are a force of northmen who come down from Winterfell in support of Rhaenyra and the Blacks. We see them briefly marching through the Twins at the end of season 2. The army is comprised mostly of grizzled older northmen, often grandfathers who are nearing the end of their lives.
For a time, it was customary for the elderly men of the North to leave their families during a harsh winter so that their children and grandchildren wouldn’t be burdened with taking care of them. These men would join together and search of honor, battle, and death.
This makes for a particularly dangerous army, one with nothing to lose, whose members not only believe in Rhaenyra’s cause but believe this climactic battle will be their last war, and so will not go quietly even when outnumbered. The Winter Wolves are the North manifest, and wherever they show up in House of the Dragon, there’s glorious bloodshed.
House Of The Dragon Season 3 Will Feature The Winter Wolves In One Of The War’s Bloodiest Battles
With the recent HBO Max trailer, we’ve got a few scenes of the Winter Wolves, one in which the old, bearded men are charging towards something off-screen, with a few being shot by arrows in the process. It’s not clear which battle this is, but in all likelihood, it’s one of the Dance of Dragons’ bloodiest wars.
The First Battle of Tumbleton is one of the major set-piece battles in the Dance of Dragons, and it’s very likely to be the biggest battle shown in season 3, probably towards the end of the season. Without spoiling too much, it’s a huge battle that will involve a significant number of major characters.
What’s more, the battle will see the Winter Wolves showing why they are one of the most feared forces around. In Game of Thrones, the armies of the North end up getting slaughtered, but in House of the Dragon season 3, we’ll see why they were once considered a formidable group.
