Image Comics has recently been practicing the art of the tease, and yesterday they rolled out a pretty good one, suggesting Grant Morrison was coming back to comics.
Morrison has been resting on their comics laurels since 2021 when they wrapped up a run on Green Lantern and moved back into screenwriting. After all, as the now 64-year-old MBE told me back in 2016, ““There’s nothing left. I actually don’t have any dream projects now.” Although they have also regaled folks with tales from the vault on their Substack for a while.
But as the teaser shows, there may be ONE thing Morrison could be tempted by: ice cream. They are only human after all, and we all like ice cream.
Conventional wisdom – and an in-depth analysis of the lettering font used for the teaser, suggests that Morrison may be teaming up with ICE CREAM MAN, an anthology series written by W. Maxwell Prince with art by Martin Morazzo and Chris O’Halloran. The title has won a cult following for it’s Twilight Zone-like tales of “sorrow, wonder, and redemption.” It’s a format that comics have always excelled at, and Hollywood has noticed as well. At one point the series was optioned by the disastrous short video platform Quibi, but thankfully that option lapsed. BUT just a few scant days ago it was reported that the comic is once again in development but as a movie, with Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice scribes Alfred Gough and Miles Miller set to adapt for Sony’s Screen Gems label.
So when you add it all up – Grant Morrison, master of sorrow, wonder, and redemption and now screenwriting, teaming up with a very imaginative comic that can encompass many emotes….well, tease away!
BUT there could be another interpretation. Maybe….Grant Morrison just likes ice cream. What flavor would they seek out? Rocky Road? Activated Charcoal? Or, our own pick, one of the delicious flavors from Indian treat company, Vadilal, like Badam Carnival or Chikoo. They are all good.
All kidding aside, Morrison is one of the greats, so having them back in comics, even briefly, is something to look forward to almost as much as a big bowl of ice cream.
