The Creature Commandos are taking the DC Universe by storm! James Gunn showed off a new trailer for the series at this year’s NYCC.
While most of the internet has been focused on Superman as the first project in the new DC Universe, the true freshman outing is a wacky animated series that leans into James Gunn’s more outlandish tendencies. Creature Commandos is officially set to kick off the reboot this December, and a brand new trailer is here to celebrate it.
The trailer debuted at NYCC ratchets up the stakes for the Creature Commandos team. James Gunn brought together a truly eclectic roster for the series, including Frankenstein (David Harbour), The Bride (Indira Varma), Doctor Phosphorous (Alan Tudyk), Mermaid (Zoe Chao), and Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo). It also features familiar faces from the old DC Universe, such as Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and Sean Gunn as both Weasel and G.I. Robot.
Who Are The Creature Commandos?
The Creature Commandos are a super team from the bargain bin of the DC Universe, making them a perfect choice for James Gunn to adapt into an animated series. Having first premiered in the pages of Weird War Tales in 1980, the book featured an original roster of monster-themed superheroes. While Gunn has swapped out the characters for more familiar faces, the spirit of the team remains intact in the most recent trailer for the show.
While seemingly an odd group for James Gunn to choose to start his new DC Universe with, Creature Commandos was actually in development long before him and Peter Safran were chosen to helm the reboot. In many ways, the series will bridge the dap between the new and old continuities, melding them together in the insanity Gunn is known and loved for.
Creature Commandos is scheduled to premiere on Max in December. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe.
