James McAvoy has opened up about turning down the role of Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek. The actor recalled initially expressing interest in the part but ultimately deciding he wasn’t the right fit for the iconic role. McAvoy also shared his thoughts on Chris Pine’s take on the legendary Starfleet captain.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McAvoy recalled meeting Abrams for lunch in Los Angeles to discuss the film. He said he suggested playing Kirk but later told the director, “I’m not going to test for it cuz I’m not right for it.”
Why James McAvoy thought he wasn’t right for Star Trek’s Captain Kirk
McAvoy explained that Abrams’ screenplay presented a different side of Kirk. Rather than portraying an already established leader, the story followed a flawed young man. He had to learn and grow before becoming the captain audiences would recognize.
The actor described this version of Kirk as “the quarterback gone wrong.” He praised the script’s exploration of how the character could become whole again. He clarified that his comments had not influenced Abrams’ eventual casting decision.
McAvoy expressed particular admiration for Pine, who took on the role in the 2009 film. He praised the actor’s interpretation, saying, “You couldn’t have got a better interpretation of my direction than the Kirk we got.”
He also praised Pine’s appearance and personality, noting that the actor brought more to the role than the conventional qualities of a lead star.
Released in 2009, Star Trek reintroduced the franchise’s central characters, with Pine playing Kirk and Zachary Quinto portraying Spock. Karl Urban also starred as Dr. Leonard McCoy. The film explored their earlier years and the events that brought them together aboard the USS Enterprise.
Although McAvoy did not pursue the role, his comments make clear that he admired Abrams’ vision for the character. He also believes Pine delivered a performance that matched the screenplay’s interpretation of Kirk.
