Janelle Monáe believes that she went back in time to see a hero—just for one day.
In a conversation with Lucy Dacus, the “Oh, Maker” singer explained that she managed to time travel to see David Bowie, who died in 2016, during his heyday.
“I traveled back into the 1970s,” Janelle explained in Rolling Stone’s “Musicians on Musicians” interview published Oct. 20. “And I saw him do Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and it was incredible.”
Understandably shocked by the revelation of Janelle seeing the 1973 concert musical live, Lucy, 30, clarified, “You traveled back?”
“Yes,” Janelle, 39, explained. “I was backstage and I was like, ‘This is what I want to do.’ And so I jetted back to the 2000s and I was like, ‘I can have the musical, make the music, create the lyrics,’ and create a community around transformation and being queer and—not even in sexuality but in how we see the world.”
