Jason Statham & Sylvester Stallone’s New $86 Million Action Movie Avoided An Unwanted Box Office Record

Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone reunited for A Working Man, and the new action movie avoided setting a box office record neither of them wanted to break. The two action movie stars first got together on the big screen in 2010 with The Expendables. It proved to be the start of a continued partnership between them where they star in films together. But, there are also examples like A Working Man where Stallone works on one of Statham’s action movies in a different capacity. Instead of being his co-star, Stallone co-wrote the screenplay for A Working Man.

This came after the grizzled action star spent time developing the Levon’s Trade book as a TV show, but it never got off the ground. While hopes of a Stallone cameo in A Working Man didn’t come to fruition, the movie still marks the sixth time the actors have worked together in some capacity. They’ve experienced some great success in the past, as evidenced by The Expendables franchise’s box office receipts. But, it’s not always a fruitful partnership. The good news is that A Working Man‘s box office has already cleared a major milestone for both men.

A Working Man Avoided Being Jason Statham & Sylvester Stallone’s Lowest Grossing Movie Collaboration

It’s Done Good Business At The Box Office

After almost a month in theaters, A Working Man has delivered a sizable haul for Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, director David Ayer, and Amazon MGM. The movie has made $86.9 million at the worldwide box office as of the time of this writing. That’s still well below Statham and Ayer’s last action movie, The Beekeeper ($162 million), but the film is still drawing in audiences globally. That’s helped it ensure A Working Man won’t be the lowest-grossing movie Statham and Stallone have made together.

That record easily belongs to The Expendables 4. The duo’s last collaboration came in 2023 and was a surprising box office disaster. The Expendables 4 only made $37 million at the box office. That helped it easily break the record previously set by Homefront ($48 million) as the lowest grossing movie Statham and Stallone were both involved in. A Working Man has doubled up the box office performance of Expendables 4, easily clearing the benchmark and resetting the unwanted box office record.

With A Working Man‘s budget reportedly in the $40 million range, the movie is destined to be considered a box office success soon, if it isn’t already. It only needs to make $100 million worldwide to cross the usual threshold where a movie breaks even by making 2.5x its budget at the box office. That’s notable for Stallone and Statham. It makes A Working Man their first movie together since 2012 to be a guaranteed box office success.

2012 remains the pinnacle for Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone collaborations at the box office. The Expendables 2 grossed $314.9 million against a $100 million budget. From there, the duo saw Homefront make $48 million after costing $22 million, meaning it was just shy of hitting its breakeven point. The Expendables 3 made $214 million the following year off a reported $90M to $100M budget. It came anywhere between $11 million and $36 million short then. The Expendables 4 didn’t even recoup half its budget at the box office. Now, A Working Man redeems the partnership at the box office.
