Aaron Sorkin’s sequel to The Social Network is finally starting to come together and Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White are circling the lead roles. While nothing’s set in stone yet, sources close to the project say Sorkin has already sat down with both actors as the film continues its early development phase.
Sorkin, who wrote the original 2010 screenplay, will write and direct this follow-up. This time, the story shifts from the creation of Facebook to the damning exposé revealed in The Facebook Files, a 2021 series by journalist Jeff Horwitz published in the Wall Street Journal.
The articles pulled back the curtain on how Facebook knowingly amplified misinformation and fostered content that negatively affected teens and even contributed to political unrest.
Sorkin is producing alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser, but the film hasn’t officially been greenlit by Sony yet.
Madison, who just earned an Oscar for her performance in Sean Baker’s indie hit Anora, is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood. She’ll appear next to Kirsten Dunst in Reptilia, and she’s reportedly in talks to join A24’s The Masque of Death.
White continues to ride high after his Emmy-winning run in FX’s The Bear. He’ll portray Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere, set to release this fall, and he’s also voicing Rotta the Hutt in Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
There’s no word yet on whether Jesse Eisenberg will return as Mark Zuckerberg, or if any of the original cast including Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, or Armie Hammer will reprise their roles.
The first film, directed by David Fincher, was a critical and commercial success, earning over $226 million worldwide and snagging three Oscars out of eight nominations including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Original Score.
