Were the Young Avengers going to be the MCU’s next saviors? Writer Michael Waldron reveals what role the team was going to play in Avengers: Kang Dynasty.
Avengers: Kang Dynasty is one of the only films in the history of the MCU that has been publicly and officially cancelled. As such, there’s been a lot of speculation about what role some of the key players of the Multiverse Saga would have had in the project. Perhaps the biggest question is what would have happened to the Young Avengers- a team Marvel is clearly setting up but hasn’t pulled the trigger on quite yet.
Luckily for fans, the writer of Avengers: Kang Dynasty recently shed some light on the cancelled project. Michael Waldron took to Reddit for an AMA to promote his upcoming series Chad Powers. During this, the writer touched on the role the Young Avengers would have played…and fans aren’t exactly ecstatic about it.
“Jeff Loveness and I spent an afternoon pitching on the Young Avengers defeating a version of Kang and being so stoked about it…only to discover that that particular Kang carried a little card that said to Be Patient with him, it was his first day as a Kang. And then they were so bummed. I think he was gonna be the lizard Kang from the end of Kang Dynasty? I don’t know. Anyway we had fun.”
The Young Avengers’ Role In The MCU
This news came as disappointing to fans who were hoping that the Young Avengers may have been set to play a vital role in Avengers: Kang Dynasty. If this is true, it seems as though Michael Waldron just saw the team as a dangling thread the MCU set up that he had to do SOMETHING with, and didn’t seem to have them contribute much to the story aside from the gag.
Much of what has plagued the MCU in recent years is that its projects would set up some very interesting stories, like that of the Young Avengers, and not cash in the potential with anything interesting. If Michael Waldron stayed on as the writer for whatever Avengers: Kang Dynasty transformed into, it’s not clear whether or not audiences would have responded positively to the direction he took the characters.
