Royal fans were in for a treat on Sunday evening when the Prince and Princess of Wales stepped out at London’s Royal Festival Hall for the 79th British Academy Film Awards.
For the first time in three years, Kate attended the event in an enchanting, ethereal pink, off-the-shoulder gown by Gucci, which she first wore in 2019.

The beautiful formal dress featured a muted mauve and pink colour palette and was cut immaculately with a cinched waistline, shoulder-grazing V-neck bodice, and a fluid skirt that floated as she walked.

The sheer number was accessorised to perfection with a burgundy velvet clutch bag to match the waistline of her dress and feminine stiletto heels. Looking every inch the royal mermaid, the 44-year-old wore her tumbling brunette locks in soft, lightly curled loose waves. Her makeup was natural yet defined; she appeared to have opted for classic warm brown eyeshadow, a touch of iridescent highlighter, and a slick of rosy pink lipstick.

Gucci is one of the world’s most instantly recognisable fashion labels, as it blends equestrian-inspired motifs with bold, zany colours and elaborate, flamboyant textures. The label was founded in Florence in 1921 and has evolved over the years. As a fashion editor who has been writing about style for over fifteen years, I think the label embodies statement dressing, with bold, daring looks that seem a surprising choice for Kate.

Kate famously made flashbulbs pop at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum in 2017 while opening a new exhibition. At the time, fans were taken aback by her tweed frock, which was cut shorter than most of her hemlines; it finished just above the knee! The statement design packed a powerful punch with its bold black, red, and white colourway, and it was made with the designer label’s signature web trim and gold statement buttons.

Then known as the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate looked fabulous at the V&A Museum in 2019 for a gala dinner, wearing her pink Gucci gown for the very first time. The then-37-year-old sported a flick of eyeliner, brown eye-shadow, and nude lipstick, which highlighted her pretty features. She accessorised with drop earrings, silver heels, and a burgundy velvet clutch and wore her famous mane in a half-up, half-down style.

Also in 2019, the brunette royal paid a visit to the Henry Fawcett Children’s Centre in Lambeth, sporting a deep purple Gucci blouse with a pussy-bow necktie. Kate teamed the shirt with a pair of black trousers by Jigsaw and carried a fabulous croc bag by Aspinal London.

Last year, William and Kate carried out a series of joint engagements in Pontypridd, south Wales, and Kate looked as chic as ever. The royal sported one of her most famous red coats, which was a custom-created style by Alexander McQueen. Later that day, she swapped her coat for a simple tweed jacket, which showcased her delightful Gucci check skirt underneath. The bold, pleated style featured a burgundy and yellow pattern and was a modern twist on the traditional skirt.
