Kate Winslet has played for the home team in the past.
The Titanic actress recently opened up about some of her “first intimate experiences” — which involved other women! On Wednesday’s episode of the Team Deakins podcast, Kate spoke about her breakout role in Peter Jackson’s 1994 film Heavenly Creatures, which follows her and Melanie Lynskey as teen girls in an… intense… friendship.
When asked how much from her own life she brought to the role, the Oscar winner revealed her “first intimate experiences” as a teen were with some of her female friends! OMG! She dished:
“I’ll share something I’ve never shared before. Some of my first intimate experiences as a young teen were actually with girls. I’d kissed a few girls, and I’d kissed a few boys, but I wasn’t particularly evolved in either direction.”

She added the experiences helped her understand the “really intense connection” she and Lynskey were tasked with bringing to life in Heavenly Creatures:
“At that stage in my life, I certainly was curious, and I think there was something about the really intense connection that those two women had that I profoundly understood. I was so immediately sucked into the vortex of that world they were in that obviously became horrendously damaging to both of them, and they had huge insecurities and vulnerabilities.”
Elsewhere, the 50-year-old noted that while she “couldn’t truly understand” the heavier aspects of the film, she could relate to the connections that can be made while being young and “vulnerable.”
