First published in the ’70s, Marvel brought “Giant-Size” titles last year in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the format. It was successful enough that Marvel is continuing to publish Giant-Size, such the upcoming Giant-Size X-Men event. Today the publisher announced details for Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man #1, a special one-shot described as “bringing together mega talent to tell a range of stories spanning the Marvel mythos” including writer Al Ewing, Chip Zdarsky, and most notably Kevin Smith.
As many are well aware at this point, filmmaker and podcaster Kevin Smith is an unabashed comic fan and has had the chance to dip his toe writing comics over the years with the celebrated launch of the Daredevil title under the Marvel Knights imprint with the “Guardian Devil” storyline. Since then, he’s written comics for other publishers over the years and even launched his own Secret Stash Press imprint under Dark Horse. However, it’s been quite some time since Smith has written for Marvel in almost two decades. I’m sure there’s still a few people out there still waiting for him to finish the Daredevil/Bullseye: The Target. Stranger things have happened. Wonder if we’re more likely to see Daredevil/Bullseye finished or Batman: Bellicosity, Smith’s sequel to the Batman: The Widening Gyre miniseries?
For this Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man one-shot, Smith will be collaborating with artist Giuseppe Camunco for a story involving the web-slinger and the Fantastic Four. Meanwhile writer Al Ewing and artist Mark Buckingham “spin a decade-spanning adventure with Spider-Man and some of his best friends.” The final story written by Chip Zdarsky and drawn by Cafu will apparently introduce a brand-new character that Marvel teases will will play a big role in the future.
Spider-Editor Nick Lowe hyped up the one-shot saying:
“Everyone always says GIANT SIZE X-MEN this, GIANT-SIZE X-MEN that,” says Spider-Editor Nick Lowe. “And I’m sick of it, so we put together the best and coolest GIANT-SIZE book ever.”
“Kevin Smith and Giuseppe Camuncoli spin an instant classic! Al Ewing and Mark Buckingham use Spidey as a prism to the whole Marvel Universe and it’s history! Chip Zdarsky and Cafu bring you the coolest new Marvel character in recent memory who throws Spidey for a loop! And that’s not even all! THERE’S ALSO—” Lowe said before being cut off for spoiling too much.
Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man will feature a cover drawn by Greg Capullo and arrives in comic shops on Wednesday, June 11th, 2025.
