Wow! The royals usually NEVER respond to reports like this!
On Wednesday, the Daily Mail published an excerpt of Charles Spencer‘s new book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
In their preview was the claim that a then Prince Charles made a supremely hurtful comment to Princess Diana‘s brother shortly after her death in 1997. Per the Mail, Charles wrote:
“Prince Charles continued his stream of anger, without me interrupting. Then he stopped. I assumed the pause signaled an effort to bring himself under control, but then he unleashed down the phone what I have always taken to be his pent-up contempt for Diana, and his horror that the world was so bowled over by her death. ‘Rest assured,’ he hissed, ‘we’ll forget her soon enough!’”
Ouch, ouch, ouch.
At first Buckingham Palace had no comment on the accusation, per an earlier report from People magazine, but now the outlet has received more information from a Palace spokesperson.

The rep for the monarch states:
“While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss.”
Oof.
