Kurt Russell shared how his latest role in The Madison was a perfect reflection of his life with his longtime love, Goldie Hawn, whom he has been dating since 1983.
The 75-year-old spoke to Men’s Health about the series, which was created by the mind behind Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan. In the show, he portrays Preston Clyburn, the late husband of Michelle Pfeiffer’s Stacy Clyburn, whose untimely passing prompts Stacy to move from NYC to Montana.
“Some of the conversations that [Preston and Stacy] have, I’ve had,” Kurt told the publication. “Goldie and I have had very similar conversations. Their relationship, it’s the kind of relationship you almost never see anymore. It’s a truly loving relationship. It’s not like there’s another shoe to drop. That’s what makes it so difficult for [Michelle’s] character when she loses her husband.”
“She’s realizing how much more they could have had that they didn’t have because of something she didn’t do,” he continued. “I think a lot of people relate to that kind of regret.”
“As you get older and you’ve only got so much time left, that doubles things up in terms of looking at what you’ve done in your life so far and what you want to do with the rest of your life.”
The father of four added that it was important to see a relationship play out onscreen that was strong and steadfast, despite his character’s tragic end. “It’s different in that you’re seeing a relationship that is actually a successful one. You don’t see that much anymore,” he explained.
“It’s always dysfunction, dysfunction, dysfunction, and I thought this was very different. Having been in a long relationship, myself, with Goldie, and Michelle having been in a long relationship with her husband, David E. Kelley, who’s a great writer in his own right, we were bringing the right experience together.”

Kurt and Goldie first crossed paths on the set of the 1968 film The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, when he was 16, and she was 21, yet the actress thought he was much too young.
The pair reunited 17 years later while filming Swing Shift in 1983, and have been together ever since, yet never married. They share a son, Wyatt Russell, and while Goldie is a devoted stepmom to Kurt’s son, Boston Russell, Kurt is a loving stepdad to Goldie’s kids, Kate and Oliver Hudson.
The Hateful Eight star shared with Men’s Health that Stacy and Preston’s relationship in The Madison was not the only aspect that he could connect with on the show.
“I moved to Colorado when I was 26 years old. At a certain point, you find yourself asking whether you’re going to live the life you want to live, or if you’re just going to talk about it,” he said. “And I decided to make the move and live the life I wanted to live.”
“But my business was still primarily out of Los Angeles, so my life’s been split, going back and forth. I’m glad I did what I did,” Kurt continued. “I’ve enjoyed my life the way I’ve wanted to, and I’ve been able to continue on in the business too. I was able to make that happen. I could draw on that in The Madison.“
