Will the Eternals ever return in the MCU? Lauren Ridloff reveals if she thinks she’ll ever get a chance to play Makkari once more on the silver screen.
The Eternals is perhaps the oddest film in the entire catalogue of the MCU. The project was helmed by recent Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao, who focused on trying to be a more artsy film than other projects in the franchise. It also had a stacked cast, from stars like Selma Hayek and Gemma Chan to obscure rising actors like Lauren Ridloff and the (at the time) underrated Barry Keoghan.
Despite this, the film is considered a failure. While performances from the main cast, especially Lauren Ridloff and Barry Keoghan, were praised, the film bombed with critics while only doing relatively decent with audiences. And while the box office wasn’t terrible for a movie of its size, it failed to make a cultural impact that would encourage Marvel to bring them back to the MCU for, most likely, a smaller box office return.
Will The Eternals Return?
This has left many wondering if the Eternals would return in any way, or if the characters would be left in the franchise’s forgotten waste bin alongside Harley Keener and the Inhumans. Lauren Ridloff was actually asked about if there’s any hope for the team to appear as the Multiverse Saga comes to an end. Sadly, it doesn’t seem likely, at least in her eyes.
“Not likely,” Ridloff told The Direct. “I don’t know, my magic eight ball is telling me ‘Not likely.
This would certainly be a shame, especially given how many stand-out performances there were in Eternals. Even if the characters can’t carry a project on their own, actors like Lauren Ridloff and Gemma Chan are dynamic enough to play as a supporting cast member in any number of projects. Though given the current state of MCU discourse, it’s understandable Marvel wouldn’t want to take any big swings right now.
