Hot on the heels of the news that Lazarus Rising Games had initiated its campaign to return the legendary 1990s collectible card game OverPower to its original glory, signing licensing deals with Top Cow Productions, the company launched an OverPower Kickstarter campaign that was fully funded in under ten minutes.
Full details in the official press release below:
Lazarus Rising Games’ resurrection of the legendary 1990s collectible card game OverPower has enjoyed a strong October in its march to a formal relaunch in late 2024, initiating a kickstarter that quickly funded and is rapidly growing, and experiencing a healthy surge of interest from both avid fans and new-to-the-game players at OverPower’s heavily-trafficked booth on the floor of New York Comic Con.
The OverPower kickstarter, which opened two days prior to New York Comic Con on October 15, officially funded its initial goal of $50,000 in just 10 minutes and, to date, has already raised nearly one quarter of a million dollars on the backing of just over 500 individuals. While some reward tiers have already sold out, there is a diverse array of tiers still available, and featuring an impressive range of rewards that include starter decks, booster packs/boxes, foil unlocks, power card stations, limited edition 2023 & 2024 promo cards, special playmats, uncut sheet commons, a host of rare cards and bundles, and much more.
“Having the kickstarter fund just moments after we posted was inspiring to the Lazarus Rising Games team, and definitely validated our own personal love for the game,” said CEO & co-founder Joseph Gagnepain. “The extended support has provided a clear signal that there is a true hunger for CCGs and, in particular, the new approach and enhanced artwork and gameplay that we’re pioneering for OverPower.”

Perfectly positioned for high traffic and designed to capture the beauty and excitement of the game’s artwork, the OverPower booth at New York Comic Con featured both game play demonstrations and incredibly popular giveaways, including two limited edition, NYCC-exclusive cards (Witchblade & Leonidas) and play-ready starter decks featuring Edgar Rice Burroughs and the World Legends IPs. The booth was manned by the majority of Lazarus Rising Games (LRG) leadership: Gagnepain, co-founder & President Ronald Pozzi, Chief Technical Officer Keith Bursack, Chief Operations Officer David McMillan, Art Director Shawn Sawyer, and LRG’s newest associate Tyler Bertrand.
“The sheer enthusiasm for OverPower was overwhelming at New York Comic Con,” said Pozzi, “It was a fascinating, wonderful mix of fans coming to the booth who were either passionate players from the 1990s – and some, like our LRG team, who have never stopped playing – and an incredible array of new individuals with an easy understanding and instant passion for the game. We know we’ve got an incredible game in every way possible, and it was extremely encouraging to meet such a wide array of people who share our love for OverPower.”
Part of that enthusiasm for the relaunch of OverPower has been fueled by LRG’s dogged pursuit of new IP licenses and notable artists. LRG recently signed licensing deals with Top Cow Productions, Inc. and Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. that include the likes of Top Cow’s Witchblade, Darkness and Cyberforce, as well as Burroughs’ iconic Tarzan of the Apes® and John Carter of Mars®. LRG has also added renowned comic book & CCG artists Philip Tan, Jim Chung and Jae Lee, with additional new artist deals expected to be announced in the coming weeks, and is currently in negotiation with several prominent companies to add their beloved characters to the OverPower stable.
Formerly known as BMG & Associates, Lazarus Rising Games’ core ownership is comprised of a group of successful professionals who spent their youth playing OverPower – and continue to this day. Their passion for the game is the driving force of the company, and their experience ensures the game’s authenticity to its roots while relentlessly seeking new assets to infuse the game’s resurgence. As the collectible card game market has continued to once again blossom, the LRG team has sought to position OverPower at the center of that revival by appealing to the game’s loyal fans – and prospective new players – with the acquisition of new IPs, an inclusive, creative set of rules for smooth, exciting gameplay, and absolutely stunning artwork from some of the top illustrators in the games and comics industries. Further establishing OverPower’s CCG footprint, LRG has entrusted production of its cards to legendary Cartamundi.
LRG has already begun a soft rollout of the game’s new aspects and cards, initially offering two new sets earlier this year – which sold out immediately – for test-playing the new mechanics of the game. A new full core set is now in production with deliveries expected in early 2025, and additional expansions are in the works for Q4 of 2025.
