Australian acting icon Leila Hayes, known for shows including Prisoner and Sons and Daughters, has died.
Hayes died at the age of 85, with an obituary being shared on the Leila Hayes Drama Studio Facebook page and a statement shared by her daughter Melissa.
The star died on January 19, after “an extended period of health challenges,” but “passed peacefully” at hospital on the Northern Beaches.

“Leila Marion Hayes, one of Australia’s most beloved television personalities and Penguin Award-winning actress, has passed away at the age of 85,” the obituary shared on the page read.
“Known for her iconic portrayal of Beryl Palmer in Sons and Daughters, Hayes leaves behind a rich legacy spanning television, radio, theatre, and education.”
It continued: “Following an extended period of health challenges, Hayes passed peacefully at Northern Beaches Hospital. In her final days, she celebrated her birthday surrounded by family and was lovingly attended by her only daughter Melissa throughout her last week.”

It said the late star is survived by her family including her daughter and grandsons.
“The family sends their love to all of Leila’s friends and fans, and asks their privacy be respected during this difficult time,” it added.
Underneath, fans and followers and even former drama students rushed to share their heartbreak and send messages of condolences to her family.
“Absolutely heartbroken. Leila was a huge part of my childhood and Beryl the beating heart of S&D [Sons and Daughters]. My thoughts are with the family at this truly terrible time,” one person wrote.

Another said she was “one of the best in the business”.
On Monday, Melissa shared a follow up message to followers, thanking them for the outpouring of support and the tributes and memories that flowed in.
“It means the world to me and my family at this difficult time,” Melissa wrote.
“Yesterday’s message was not easy to share, and done only out of the great respect she had for all those who have followed, worked with or studied with her over the years.

The late actress hailed from Victoria and forged a successful career for herself in Australia.
She portrayed Beryl on Sons and Daughters, Sue Bushell on A Country Practice and Jeannie Baxter on Prisoner.
She also appeared in episodes of The Truckies, The Sullivans and Bluey.
The star turned to radio in her later years before running her drama studio in Melbourne and Sydney.
