Welcome back to The Beat Digest, a twice-weekly round-up of the biggest comics-related news stories we’ve missed every Tuesday and Friday. Is there a story out there you think we should cover? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

§ Variety reports Paramount have set a November 17, 2028 release date for a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, produced by Neal H. Moritz (Sonic the Hedgehog, The Fast and the Furious). It will mark the Splinter Clan’s first live-action outing since 2016’s Michael Bay production Out of the Shadows, and is unconnected to previous in-development film projects, with Paramount hoping Moritz will repeat what he achieved with Sonic for the turtles. In the meantime, the sequel to the animated Mutant Mayhem will be released on September 17, 2027.

Speaking of Sonic, Paramount also claimed a December 22, 2028 release date for an untitled “Sonic Universe Event Film.” The news follows claims that a spin-off was being developed for Keanu Reeves‘s Shadow the Hedgehog, who was the main antagonist of the third film, which would make it the second major spin-off for the films, following the Knuckles series on Paramount+. At the time of writing, the only other movie penciled in for December 2028 is an unnamed MCU film on the 15th. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 itself, featuring Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, will premiere in theaters beforehand on March 19, 2027.

§ Via AIPT, Scholastic unveiled the cover for Unico: Lost, the third volume of Samuel Sattin and Gurihiru‘s reimagining of the classic manga by Osamu Tezuka. Due out July 7, 2026, the book will find the titular little unicorn seeking help “from the Fey queen Titania. But danger lurks. The goddess Venus and the monstrous hunter, Iver, remain bent on destroying Unico. Meanwhile, Starrow, a celestial scientist, trains Unico’s friends, the cats Chloe and Toast, to travel across time and space. But can they reach Unico before Venus does?” The first two volumes of the reboot are available now.

§ ICv2 shares Ten Speed Graphic will publish a four-part adaptation of The Revolution Trilogy, historian Rick Atkinson‘s chronicle of the American Revolution, scripted by Nora Neus with art by Federico Pietrobon. Vol. 1, The British Are Coming, covering the war from 1775 to early 1776, will be released in June 2026, shortly before the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The British Are Coming Vol. 2 will follow in Fall 2027. Incidentally, the third volume of Atkinson’s series has yet to be released, with the second volume, The Fate of the Day, only covering the war until 1780.

Ten Speed also released their Spring 2026 catalog. Books include an adaptation of Kiersten White‘s horror novel Mister Magic, by Scott Peterson, Veronica Fish, and Andy Fish. Out June 9, 2026, Mister Magic follows a group of former child stars, who reunite 30 years after a terrible event that led to the cancellation of their show. Also listed are A Brief History of a Long War, an exploration of Ukraine’s history by Mariam Naiem, Yulia Vus, and Ivan Kypibida, releasing January 27, and Renee Nault (The Handmaid’s Tale)’s YA sci-fi romance Salvage, out July 21. § In an interview with Bleeding Cool, actress Claudia Black revealed she won’t return as Nightsister Klothow in Ahsoka season two. She explains, “Disney, which is structuring things differently these days, could not pay me what I needed to be paid as a single mother to keep all my responsibilities going at home in Los Angeles, because they were filming in London.” Ahsoka season two, which’ll see the Great Mothers and Thrawn commence their campaign from Dathomir, will be released on Disney+ next year, while Black will be seen instead in Spartacus: House of Ashur, premiering on Starz this Friday.

§ Finally, acclaimed Czech-born British playwright and screenwriter Tom Stoppard died on Saturday, November 29, aged 88. A Jewish child refugee, Sir Stoppard was best known for his Hamlet-inspired play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (which he also directed the film version of), and for co-writing Shakespeare in Love (which he won an Oscar for), but readers of this site may know him best for his uncredited work on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. He is survived by his third wife, Sabrina Guinness, and four sons from his previous marriages.
