Maamoul Press is releasing Amal El-Nakhala‘s A Normal Conversation in a Normal Household, a sketch diary zine of shorts made by the Palestinian visual artist displaced by the ongoing war in Gaza. Proceeds from the sale of the zine will go towards assisting the author as she attempts to rebuild her life with her family from Cairo, Egypt.
A Normal Conversation in a Normal Household is a 24-page risograph print zine that Maamoul Press will sell for $15. Preorders are currently open with the zine expected to ship from Monday (August 5).
The publisher will launch the zine tomorrow (August 3) at Pop-Up for Palestine, Detroit – a free-entry event of zine-making, letterpress printing, with a shop of comics, zines, prints, and more. All proceeds from the shop will go toward Gaza mutual aid efforts. It will take place at Spot Lite Detroit / Cairo Coffee, 2905 Beaufait St, Detroit, MI.
Maamoul Press is a small press collective co-founded in 2018 by artists Leila Abdelrazaq and Aya Krisht with the intent to promote the work of creators from marginalised backgrounds and encourage the arts in their respective communities via workshops, classes, exhibitions, and distribution assistance. Their web store is a mix of their own material and those of member artists – including the original Arabic editions of Deena Mohamed’s acclaimed Egyptian graphic novel Shubeik Lubeik. Some of their most recent titles have included Inside The Giant Fish, by Rawand Issa (translated from Arabic by Amy Chiniara); and Aya Krisht’s zine about the Palestine-Lebanon border To Walk Freely.
In April 2024 it was announced via their newsletter that Maamoul Press will be going on an indefinite hiatus from September. Their web store will remain active, but the continued availability of titles has not yet been disclosed. Their next confirmed appearance, after Pop-Up for Palestine, will be Autoptic Festival, Minneapolis on August 17.
