As you explore and discover more of the Forbidden Lands in Monster Hunter Wilds, you can take on a series of sidequests for the people who inhabit its many settlements. One of those people is the researcher Samin, whose particular area of interest is Endemic Life. At some point, Samin will grant you the first of his questline: “Samin’s Research Report,” which tasks you with tracking down a Dapperwing in the Scarlet Forest. After you complete it, along with a similar research quest for Dareel, Samin will grant you “Samin’s Research Report (Cont),” the second part of the quest.
This one has a similar conceit: you’ll be searching for a unique Endemic Life species, the Rime Beetle, albeit in a different region of Monster Hunter Wilds‘ map. It’s not a particularly difficult quest once you find the Rime Beetle, but knowing where to look is the hardest part. Here’s how you can find a Rime Beetle to complete Samin’s second quest in Monster Hunter Wilds, and what you’ll get for your trouble so you can decide whether it’s worth it.

Where To Find Rime Beetles In Monster Hunter Wilds
Rime Beetles are exclusive to the Iceshard Cliffs, the fourth region you unlock naturally as you progress through Wilds‘ story. The Iceshard Cliffs are home to many dangerous monsters like Jin Dahaad. They also have a unique environmental condition that requires you to consume Hot Drinks in order to avoid suffering negative status effects from the extreme cold in the area.
Specifically, there’s a high concentration of Rime Beetles around areas 2, 11, and 13 of the Iceshard Cliffs. See the map screenshots above for more precise locations. Do keep in mind that Rime Beetles’ locations may vary by season; you may find more during Plenty than during Fallow. There may also be certain alternate locations that also apply during certain seasons; however, 2, 11, and 13 seem to be the most reliable.
Rime Beetles are typically used to gain Frostburst, a type of slinger ammo that does staggering ice damage when fired at a monster.
Rime Beetles can typically be found closer to the ground; they’re not flying insects. If you’re having trouble spotting them through the heavy snows in the region, look for little snowballs that appear to be rolling themselves along the ground. That’s the Rime Beetles’ work; your Field Guide will tell you that they take snowballs back to their nests for unknown purposes.
If you’re having trouble finding Rime Beetles in the above locations for any reason, use the Filter Icons setting on your map. Press right on the D-Pad twice while the map is open, then press X/A to open a menu of all available resources throughout the map. Scroll through the list until you find the Rime Beetle, then use left and right on your D-Pad to scroll through all available locations.

Rime Beetles will occasionally despawn. I initially ran to area 2, where I saw several of them roaming around, to complete the quest. While I was taking the screenshots above, though, the RIme Beetles disappeared from my map, and I was forced to go to Area 11 instead.
How To Catch The Rime Beetle

However, simply picking up the Rime Beetle using the Circle/B button won’t be enough to satisfy Samin’s requirement. You’ll need to use your slinger to capture it, and you’ll need to equip a particular tool first. Open your toolbar by holding L1/LB, and use Square/X and Circle/B to scroll through the available options. Find the one labeled Capture Net, and select it. Finally, use your slinger as usual – L2/LT to aim, and R2/RT to fire. From there, just take your Rime Beetle back to Samin at the Windward Plains Base Camp to receive your rewards.

What’s In It For Me?
Head back to Samin at the Windward Plains Base Camp – you’ll find him in the researchers’ tent, right next to the squad counter. Talk to him to receive your reward for finding the Rime Beetle: 10 pieces of Mandragora, and 5 pieces of Honey. Mandragora is needed to craft Immunizers and Max Potions. These are some of the most potent healing items in the game, so the Mandragora will definitely come in handy. Honey is a necessary ingredient in upgrading your Potions to mega Potions – not quite so powerful as 
, but you can carry more of them at once.
While you can make a special trip to get Samin’s Rime Beetles, it’s also easy enough to happen upon them while exploring the Iceshard Cliffs. Just keep your eyes peeled as you’re wandering around the world of Monster Hunter Wilds, and you’re sure to spot one of their characteristic snowballs before long.
