Fans were shocked when it was revealed Karl Urban would be playing Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 film. A new photo gives fans their first look at the hero of Earthrealm.
The first Mortal Kombat film followed much the same legacy as the games: receiving a fairly decent reception with some glaring issues, but still raking in boatloads of money. This, of course, warranted a sequel, with Johnny Cage’s involvement being teased at the end of the first film. Fans now have their first look at Karl Urban as the Ninja Mime himself in Mortal Kombat 2 thanks to series creator Ed Boon:
The upcoming Mortal Kombat sequel is expected to pick up where the first movie left off, with the heroes of Earthrealm continuing their fight against the forces of Outworld. The film is set to introduce a number of new characters from the video game franchise, such as Karl Urban as Johnny Cage and Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, while also bringing back some of the fan-favorites from the first movie.
The history of the Mortal Kombat series
The original Mortal Kombat movie, released in 1995, was a surprise hit and went on to become a cult classic. The 2021 reboot was similarly successful, grossing over $83 million worldwide despite being released during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Mortal Kombat franchise has been a mainstay of the video game industry since the release of the first game in 1992. The series has spawned multiple sequels, spin-offs and adaptations over the years, with each new entry introducing new characters, gameplay mechanics and storylines.
Fans of the Mortal Kombat series can look forward to the return of director Simon McQuoid for the upcoming sequel. Jeremy Slater, who wrote the 2019 Netflix series The Umbrella Academy and is also working on the new DC Universe with James Gunn, has been tapped to write the screenplay.
